I would like to know what it means to other players. What things do you appreciate, or get mildly annoyed by?
I often find myself wondering why people don`t just play against their PCs, am I going mad or do other people like to get a "gg", "hola", "hello", "well done" etc?
I`d also be interested to hear any anecdotes from OTB games.
Thanks in advance!
I don't really care much for conversaton during games. I try to treat it like an OTB game in which talking is against the rules. It's nice to get a "gg" after the game, but it's not necessary; it's sort of like shaking hands OTB. I think it's the honourable thing to do to resign when winning or drawing becomes hopeless. Players who stubbornly play on appear to me to be like the golfer who never concedes a putt, no matter how simple; it's not good sportsmanship. I've received a few nasty insulting notes from a few players and they immediately go on my avoid list. There's never an excuse for such behaviour. More than anything else, I appreciate politeness from an opponent: I try to be polite and I expect the same in return.

Good luck, and Good game are just nice things you should say. When I say this, I mean it. I enjoy games and I know every game has a winner and a loser... I've said before I've got the greatest respect for the chess player who plays poor, but keeps coming back for the love of the game and doesn't resort to cheating so they can win more often.

I like to talk during games, not to the point of distraction or being a serial yakker, but it adds something to the experience if the person on the other end of the line and I talk and share our love of chess. If they are silent, I also respect that. The phrase "good luck" doesn't mean I hope you win, but it is a polite thing to say without over-analyzing the meaning. Good game/Congratulations are two phrases everyone should know and use. 🙂

I find the practice of wishing your opponent "good luck" rather absurd. Like anyone really wishes that their opponent will win.
Originally posted by TonxIn Internet chess, it really annoys the crap out of me when someone greets me or says "gg" right before the start of a 1-minute blitz game. I feel obligated to respond, even though it takes a couple of seconds off my clock.
