I'm sorry, I'm gonna be hard line on this, I dread Episode III as the only thing I have to base my hopes on are I and II. Here are some of the reasons I hold little hope:
1)Episodes I and II were awful, they were pathetic stories full of gimics and slapstick, covered up by special effects.
2)The acting was wooden e.g. I killed them, I killed them all! *groan*
3)The political storyline was amateur, I know it was meant to be accessible to children, but IV, V and VI didn't need to dumb down to the ridiculous levels of Jar Jar in the senate, I mean for &*£%$*(@~"£$^'s sake!
4)George Lucas is a tw@t, I saw him giving an interview on Episode III the other day and when it comes to fat cats rolling on a bed of money at the expense of their own values, he walked the walk and talked the talk.
5)They have sacrificed the intensity and grandeur of model sets for digital scenery and that's just wrong. The death star was fantastic because it looked like a piece of scrap put together in some sort of gothic order. How they will ever manage to match III to IV is beyond me, the difference will be a galaxy far far away.
6)No matter how many laser bolts, robots and explosions you fit into it, nothing will excuse Ewan McGregor's appalling Alec Guinness impression.
Well that's my two cents. May the force be with you 🙂
I think thats a bit harsh, everyone has their own point of view, but do as other people have and look at the script of the original star wars movies, pretty wooden acting there, the main thing carrying them was the novelty and the special effects.
Lucas isn't the best director/writer out there, read through Dune, then watch Star Wars, notice any similairities(Worm, empire, evil relative, the chosen one...)? Lucas took good storylines from a variety of stories to make Star Wars, so I don't see them as that original, but I still love them, mainly for the fact that they made sci-fi so mainstream.
I also think that the major challenge for Lucas has been to make these movies appeal to both the people who follow Star Wars and the people who don't(Who are the majority audience). To try satasfy everyone would have been almost impossible.
I don't really agree with the stories of him being a fat cat looking to make more cash out of the franchise, when he made the first movie 25 odd years ago he was talking about making some telling the story before IV.

Surely it's not much different to George W. as president?
Episode I was very poor IMO. I haven't even bothered with Episode II and I always considered myself a big Sci-Fi fan.
As far as I am concerned, Star Wars peaked with the Empire Stikes Back and has been sliding downhill ever since. So unless they bring back Irvin Kershner, make the story much darker and keep Lucas on a leash, I will not watch Ep III either.

I have to disagree with you on Episode 1 and I really, really wanted it to be good. I couldn't into the premise at all probably because the dialogue was sooooo bad. The kid playing Anakin in Episode 1 was just beyond a horrible actor. I think I did the opposite of you and expected way too much. To me, Episode 1 and 2 are on the level of Godfather III o ...[text shortened]... started on either of those because I am trying to keep hope alive for "Batman Begins"😉. 🙂
I only liked 2 since I did NOT expect much from it, and rented it.
P-
I think Episodes I and II (and probably III) fit in well with the other 3.
Most people who liked the old ones but hate the new ones probably saw the old ones when they were a kid, and like them now for nostalgia value.
Kids today probably like I-III as much as kids in 1980 did the other 3.
The only reason you don't like the new ones now is that you are no longer kids.
To summarise, all Star Wars films are for kids, not adults.

I used to have fantasies of driving to Marin County and spray painting all over Lucas's house "WHORE". Whether it be Nintendo games or Jar Jar Binks plush toys, I think Lucas sold out big time for the profit. For me, Episodes 4-6 were part of my childhood and I think these movies are a direct slap in the face to them.

To those who think I and II were bad, how would you have made the movies different, while still keeping it mainstream and appealing to everyone and not just die-hard Star Wars fans?
Yes, Jar-Jar is awful, any worse than 3POs acting and lines? (Can't stand the gold idiot)
Those who say the acting is bad, not far worse than the first ones, pop the dvds in and take an unbiased look at them. My girlfriend can't stand the series, compares the acting to chickflick and stallone style movies.
Lucas always had the plan to make these, dammit if I had a major cashcow like Star Wars I think I might probably make a few mistakes trying to earn some cash out it.
I think it is nice to think how you could have made something better, but if you did, then you probably would be mainly appealing to yourself and your movie wouldn't be well-liked, meaning less investors for the next one. Even the Sci-fi channel which is aimed at geeks like me often screws up in its movies in order to try accomodate people who aren't keen followers.
Originally posted by builderHow would I have made the movies better, that's simple: Much, much more emphasis on young Anakin (with a far better child actor than Jake Lloyd). I know the E 1 was supposed to an introduction to everybody but way too much time was spent on the conflict within the Senate which I, for one, could care less about.

I think I will get no argument from anyone that Jar Jar Binks was a bad idea. The funny thing was when I first saw pictures of the costumes in Vanity Fair before E1 came out, I thought Jar Jar looked kind of cool as was going to be something similiar to "Chewbacca" but he turned out to be the "Barney" of Star Wars.
Should not have killed off Liam Neeson's character or Darth Maul in E1. Possibly E2 but you just had time to be introduced to these characters and they die. And why doesn't Qui-Gon Jinn's spirit or image come back to council Obi-Wan like Ben did for Luke?
As for the rest, I don't know if I would changed a whole bunch but I definitely would have tightened up the dialogue. I am a firm believer in "less is more". In Empire, Vader was the man because he didn't say much. There's a lot more I could say but I think I have babbled enough 🙂
