I have an HP from the year 2002 and it is ok for most things but HP says it is too old, they don't have a recovery disk for that box anymore.
I actually loaded a copy of XP pro from a disk I had lying around and it seems to have a problem which I finally narrowed down to this XP disk, maybe a scratch at a critical place. So you all know MS stopped supporting XP but this HP machine is too old to install Vista and I can't afford to buy another comp right now, so am in the market for a store copy of XP pro, not the OEM version. Anybody have one for sale? Thanks.

A serious piece of software is the new (Hardy Heron) Ubuntu, it is free and I have various old machines which couldn't handle Vista but are better than I expected running this flavour of Linux.

Have you thought of going Linux?

Originally posted by darvlayhehe, I was thinking the same thing. For one thing, I have a nice copy of office 2000 pro, a busted version given to me by a MS programmer, I don't think linux runs MS stuff, right? If I was starting on a new HD and was going to do linux I would have to basically start over with linux compatable software and I have too much stuff like an HP photosmart printer. Can that be installed on a linux box? MS REALLY pisses me off and am ready to chuck the whole thing. I had asked for help a few months ago about a recurring problem where going from one login to another, the video res would go to a low default value of 4 bit color and minimum resolution. You may remember that issue, maybe not. So I installed XP on another box, both Dells att and had the exact same problem, not putting it together I used the same XP disk.

So with the same problem, I chucked those boxes and got an old HP pavillion and did the fresh HD thing, new install of XP pro but again, the same disk, and again with the same exact color default situation. So finally my brain put two and two together, having eliminating everything else and I tried to get help from MS, Dell and HP all to no avail. So here I am, trying to scrounge up a new copy of XP. I did find a possible on Craigs list, have emailed a message, maybe something will come of that but in the meantime, anyone else have one they can let go?

Download a copy of Ubuntu then burn it to a CD. With that CD you'll be able to pop it into your CD drive and run Ubuntu on your PC without installing it (or doing anything to XP).
Try it for a while and if you prefer it over XP then install Ubuntu form the same CD.

The amount of chuffing free software available is enormous, and if you need something different there is always plenty to choose from and you are able to download there and then.
Originally posted by WoodgieYes, I am looking at that also, do you know specifically if HP photosmart drivers can be installed on a linux box? I am pretty much stuck with the auxiliary hardware, can't afford to get an all in one specifically for linux if that's the case.

What have you got to lose by having a go?
I thought you were an electronic engineer, you are putting the rest of us to shame with your faint hearted approach, get stuck in man.

I have a lot of experience with electronics of many types but haven't done the linux thing yet. May be worth a shot. So you are saying to install linux as a second OS along side XP?

I keep a copy on a USB stick for when I get stuck with a dud XP beast.
Getting your other bits of hardware set up may require you go with an install to a spare hard drive though, it is possible to set up your live cd with the right drivers for your kit but is a bit of a job (you will know if god loves you if the drivers you need are already on the live cd).
If you play about with linux for a few weeks, your XP use will be limited, I only use XP for certain games now.

On the button there, buddy...

LOL.

I have a stack of 6 hd's that failed, problems I solved that I never mentioned here, gone through 4 computers and had online help and paid professionals tell me my problem with the video res was a shorted AGP slot, so get a PCI card and try it and your problem will go away. Sounded reasonable, did that, and to no avail. Went through two pretty much identical Dells and had the same problem I thought was a motherboard problem, I talked to some 'experts' who have a local cable show about computers and it was over their heads. I had an elderly HP given to me, totally different mobo but it had a lot of viruses on it so I put in a new HD and installed XP, the same disk as the other two comps, it seems obvious now but it wasn't then, but the HP started the exact same thing, even then I didn't think it was XP doing it, I was thinking the other comminality was the modem and the wireless router which had not been changed in two years. So talking with modem people and router people, discovered there is no talkback to the comp when you change logins and I wired the modem directly to the comp to eliminate any possible problems with the router and it did the same thing. With everything else eliminated it was obvious what the problem was, I figured it out without anyone's help and a lot of misdirection to boot. So before you exhibit your arrogance and condencending attitude, try walking in someone elses boots before you go off half clocked.

I have to still do some support work and used to do much PC and network support, so I just have a general disdain for the average computer user.
The way you phrase your questions and problems here just reminds of some of the utter idiots I've had to do work for.
Nothing personal π
