That's just what I'm saying. You're no 1500+! No 1500 would fold to a 1300 player like you did to me! This 1300 took you to school, boy! The truth is I don't use any computers, databases, nothing! I just simply play each move with thought, usually under 5 minutes. Sometimes 10 but rarely. And, I have a 1371 rating so far. I also would like to note, I played three games against a 1600 player, and lost all three. I also have played 1400+ players and drawn a bit, but lost some, too. I am truly a 1300 player, whereas Smaugie? You're playing who? HAHA!

My rating went from low 1600 to low 2000...
Play over a couple hundred UNANNOTATED master games using 5-10 min a game & trying to guess the next move. You are going after quantity here. This reinforces pattern recognition; this is how GM's play simuls so successfully...they recognize patterns and know what to look for. US Master Ken Smith used to recommed this.

Next... (1) Only consider the first 2-3 moves that pop into your head (2) Only look 3-4 moves deep. If you don't see how it loses a piece, play it. (3) Pick the move that looks the most threatening, even if it’s only in a general sort of way. (4) After your opponent moves and before you move, scan the ranks, files and diagonals.

You will then find yourself improving because you start zeroing in on opponent’s weak squares, loose pieces, things like that, and that is what chess is all about – pattern recognition and tactics; at least below Master level.

I know nobody will take this seriously, but it works......

Man, how old are you, Smaug? You must be a teenager, because you sure are letting your hormones get the best of you. I was not inferring you use computer aid. And, if you have improved that quickly since our game, then I think that's wonderful. I did not mean to upset your testosterone, young man. The world thinks you're the smartest, the best, and gosh darn it our future. Go get'm tiger! BAHAHAHAHHAHAA

What did you study to increase your strength like that, Smaug? I also might remind you that our age differs drastically I suspect. I bet you a million to one, I'm twenty years older than you are. 🙂

Learn the openings. The Ruy Lopez is a good place to start. Mastering a few openings will significantly increase your chances in the middle game, and in all likelihood, your rating will improve.

Yuga, that's hogwash! BAHAHAHA! I know that openings is the last thing a 1300 player needs to study! It's tactics a 1300 player needs to study. masscat was right. Pattern recognition is the key. THat's why I ordered Lev Alburt's Comprehensive chess course, the Russian method of micro-visualization. That course takes you all the way to 1800 from 1300. 🙂 And, also, I think I'm stronger than 1300, because my rating has dropped from playing a few strong players lately and losing. I am more around 1550 is what an 1800 player told me tonight when I played him. We even talked over the game as we played. I beat 1300 players 90+% of the time. So, that would not mean I am a 1300, now would it?

One thing you have never got to do in chess or for that matter any other game is resign. Never resign. Let the opponent checkmate you. There is always a chance of stalemate in chess. Maybe opponent may make a silly mistake because of which you escape with a draw or maybe even a win.

I know the chances are of escaping with a draw/win in such situations is very very less, but still, why give up?

If you follow this rule, it will help you get closer to 1500. Thats my theory.

it doesn't change your rating wether you play against stronger or weaker players. the rating is deviced in a such way. the rating difference tells you straight up what's the possibility of you winning. for 200pts difference, the weaker will statistically win 25% (if I remember correctly. it's in the f.a.q.) of games. if you win more than the rating difference would indicate, your rating will rise accordingly.

if you play 300pts stronger opponents, you will lose a lot. but the odd win will make your rating rise to where it was before all the losses. it all evens out in the end. that is, if your 'real' ability stays the same. of course, playing stronger opponents will make you learn more.

for that same reason, you really don't beat 90% of your 1300 opponents. that would've bumbed your rating up some 300pts. that's just how the formula works.

Yeah, whatever. You act like a child, Smaug, and I can't believe you're 25. Anyway, as for my chess computer, I beat the 1350 rated level with no problem. So, I know I'm stronger than 1300. Smaug, you need to just not say anything more. You're making yourself look like an idiot at 25. Oh, when I win one more game out of the six I'm playing Smaug, I'll play you. Then, we'll see! We're tied 1-1 right now! We'll play a 10 game match.
