I do tend toward the feeling that constructive and intelligent contributions to the forum, in game messages and analysis, etc points towards "real" players of a reasonable strength and mitigates against them being engine users but does the lack of such activity indicate the opposite. A strong player may not make such contributions because, for example, t ...[text shortened]... they simply do not have the time. There is no obligation to make such contributions after all.
A good example is when some guy here was playing in the EU championships and there was no interest at all bar the usual jokes and sideshow comments.
There is more to chess than just going through the motions.
Originally posted by cludiI tend to agree with the "takes time" bit. There is many a "helpful" message I have rushed and posted on the forum only to realise that I got things wrong and was too late in editing it.
Personally I limit my comments to in game messages because a (good) game analysis takes time to do and you cannot be sure of the value for the reader. My "contribution" to help other players is that I (almost) always accept challenges from subscribers who want to learn...
Thats part of being human but my point earlier was that a strong player may have valid reasons for not posting (you have given some) so the absence of such activity does not in itself prove anything although could certainly support other evidence.

Is it a coincident that bar Bedlam none of the >2000 players here participates in chess discussions. If you've ever been around OTB players of any ability (note I said this advisably) they are quick to share their ideas/thought processes. In OTB chess there is always someone you can learn from and someone who can learn from you.
I have seen both ilywrin and Mephisto2 participate in chess discussions here and I don't read every thread so some others may well do also.
I have come across a few high rated players in OTB chess who are aloof and arrogant and would consider discussing chess with the likes of me to be a waste of their time.
Still 3 out of several hundred is still very low. Considering that chess is not a game of chance but involves "some skill" anyone would be concerned at what "that skill" is. The situation is even more confounding when you find out that very few CC players actually play OTB/rapid chess so you wonder where they learned to play like that.
Any footballer who enjoys the game also enjoys commentating and participating in football discussions. There are no "closet" footballers.
Originally posted by z00tWay back in my youth (round about 1066 so my wife tells me) CC players tended to be older people who had "retired" from playing OTB because they simply didn't have the speed of calculation anymore. I know this true for me. I have been playing OTB for 40 years but now find it difficult to play as well as I would like when constrained by time. Have a look at Akizy's profile for a similar reason.

remember how you beat me last game?

Winning you with quick play need not be a problem for players with his rating 🙂
