It's been my experience too that good players like to talk about chess. But it's not a hard and fast rule. Some high players just don't have the time, as was noted. On the other hand, if you are a 1100 player cheating up to 2000, you aren't likely to shoot your mouth off about chess, as it would be easy to see you don't know what you're talking about, unle ...[text shortened]... o name-calling and serious players just get disgusted with the whole forum side of rhp.
Around six years ago I started to translate a book from my mother tongue - hungarian - into english. My english wasn't as good as now, but it was not a novel or poetry so my enthusiasm and knowledge was just fine. Or so did my correctors - all are englishman or women - said, since they didn't have to do much in their job. I posted the first page the author made me translate as a test on a forum. Then all the big-headed, arrogant people started goating how I made tons of mistakes blah-blah. It happened once, it happened twice and I slowly faded away from forums.
I like to talk about not only chess, but a lot of different things, but I hate forums. I see myself posting something and then recieving:
'Wooo you play too much too fast too good your a cheater."
"Wooo you kicked my a$$ you should be a cheater."
Etc.
I don't care about trash-talk, but to be honest I have not cared enough to even give a chance for them so far. I've only started checking posts recently after my friend from the Chess Club clan told me I received several accusations.
I've played at several sites, and on all of them I received accusations because slowly I gained a high rating. On the real board there's no questions and accusations. There's not any when acquire a winning position against a 2000+ player on your very first serious on the board game, or when you win against a master after playing chess for a little more than a year. So I prefer to talk in real life, too.
Another part is that you say something, and others come back at you with: 'But Susan Polgar (or Nigel Short, or whoever else) said otherwise you should be wrong.' Cut that crap out. We are human. Where I can be wrong they can be, too. And if you read any books what Seirawan wrote you can read in the prologue: 'Take everything with caution and dare to cross my opinion.'
Then comes the: 'Who are you in real life, you should be a master if you play that good.' Why would I tell who I am? I play here for fun, just as most of us do. I play here because I'm cursed to bed for four months - with two already spent - and besides reading and watching 'The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy' on Cartoon Network around 3:20 am every day, there's not much for me to do when I can't sleep all night. But I hate whining. I don't want to explain 1000000 times, that yes I play fast because I have a hernia and I'm in bed 24/7. I just like to play. Anyone. Anytime. I love the game itself, and I couldn't count the games which weren't a grand adventures themselves, but I enjoyed them because the other side was willing to learn and asked thousands of questions while playing - which I always happily answered.
I don't know for others, but these are my main reasons. I take pride in my skills, and I bet the others do, too. And for some of us avoiding every chance of trash-talking or confrontations might worth more than talking 'public'.
This was my first public post. :p Hope you liked it, if you didn't - oh well. 😉
Take Good Care Everyone,
Ry

I'm not attacking you personally, however the information you have furnished is "quite interesting" and it may be that you have been misunderstood due to you not being a native speaker of English.
Originally posted by z00tI don't think that there is anything to misunderstand here. If you look again at Ry's post, he clearly said that:

He is clearly talking about tournament/OTB play and about the absence of accusations there. Perhaps you didn't read it properly. He's made no personal references there - although he may be speaking from experience.
Oh yeah, and you show up your complete lack of understanding in your next sentence as you failed to see the word "clan" in Ry's post. He is referring to Clan 24444.

He said the Chess Club clan, i.e. on this site. He said he beat a master OTB a year after first playing, not that he first played chess a year ago.
That was all perfectly clear to me, and I suspect many others.
hmm as usual, I read these threads and just have little to offer. Anyway, I do see tons of high ranked players posting here. I have seen posts by XNZ, Tony, DavidTebb, Cludi, Akizy and NorthernLad. Some are few and very far between, but this does tend to be a rather hostile environment and only about 1/4 threads are even chess related. Most are about cheaters and etiquette.
Edit: books are also a big topic.

You can understand players of 1000-1400 not wanting to post as they probably play casually, and do not care about theory so things like pins, forks openings may be news to them. However for a 2000-2400 player only making appearances to joke is hair-raising.
