Good game.

Was he on a quest for TN's?

I am no sure what are "TN's"

While he is a strong player, he played weaker than ususal that game.

I dont think these should count unless the mate can be forced in under 20. (I know there may be some who disagree with this but should it really count just cause my opponent went on holiday for a fortnight on move t ...[text shortened]... ?

Here's my best Game 766306 move ten.

13...Qxf4 looked ok imo. The final position screams "location location location" to me.

Ya, in my game notes, I note that 3...h6 seemed odd. Seemed premature and unnecessary. But I guess not uncommon to see opponents shake things up early to avoid main lines. Maybe a TN, as you say. 3....h6 is a distant fourth move in the games database I use, with 3...Bc5 and 3...Nf6 as we know the most common moves.

Move/ Games/ White Wins
3... Bc5 26634 42.8 %
3... Nf6 22114 43.6 %
3... Be7 3545 42.9 %
3... d6 1540 51.5 %
3... h6 1399 58 %
3... Nd4 561 45.8 %
3... g6 125 54.4 %

As for 4...Bd6, I see that in the Ruy sometimes but not here. It congests his position in contrast to my open position, which contributed to an opportunity for an early king-side attack (on his uncastled position).

In the awkward position, 4...Bd6 was a distant third (9 games) in my database.

Move/ Games/ White Wins
4... exd4 164 69.5
4... d6 38 81.6 %
4... Bd6 9 77.8 %
4... f6 6 100 %
4... Nf6 4 100 %
4... Qf6 4 75 %
4... Nxd4 2 100 %

The old smothered Queen sac Knight mate. Good.

There hides inside a nice very plausible variation for Black.

At least he was mated... otherwise he would have lost his queen.

Nice discovered check with 12. e4 but a quicker forced mate was : 12. Qf4+ Kh5 13. Qg4#. But nice pressure nonetheless.

Right, I didn't notice that. I first saw that I can take his queen and started looking at this line. When I saw a forced mate, I didn't think any more...
