Originally posted by AsianRoseI thought Topalov had the last game (before tiebreaks) won...he was up a couple of pawns and to me (a real novice) looked like he was going to win...I did not get to watch the tiebreaks today...hope to look through them tonight...go Adams!!
Incredibly, Kasimdzhanov beat the seemingly best player at the tournament so far, Topalov. Now he plays Adams in the finals, with Adams the strong favorite.
Both players missed 40...Nxb5 for Adams, which would have drawn easily. Impressed that Khazim finished Adams off playing basically only on the 30 second increment, but endgames have become far more difficult now the thinking time has been removed!
Go Adams with White tomorrow. He's confirmed for the British Champs - be great to have a World Champion (of any stripe) playing in that.
Woohoo!!!!! Go Michael~>Go Michael~>Go Michael~>....*does little dance while waving arms side to side like they do on Jerry thingymajig*
Played through the loss, even i saw Nxb5! Nice to see a GM make a weak move for once. Pain in the ass he has to be British and in the bloody final of the World (couph, Fide) championships!
😵😵😵😵😵Go Michael~>Go Michael~>Go Michael~>...😵😵😵😵😵

Have to say, this is a really close match up. Some really gripping chess being played by both players. I really like Kasimdzhanov's style, can't say i'd heard of him before this tournie. Adams has looked great all tournie, really hope he can hold it together, British chess could really use a champion right about now!
Originally posted by bobbyboomerTough position for Adams. He just lost 4th game. Two more and his back is to the wall. This Kasim...is not a flash in the pan. He's giving everybody trouble. Adams is 100 or so points above him elo, and he's in poor shape against the youngster. I like Adams, but if he can pull this out it'll be a minor miracle. You can follow the games on ICC or Playchess.com or even the Tripoli site in Libya, which has a live webcam of the game, so it's just like being there--as long as the webcam works. With me it's been sporadic. I did notice there are practically no spectators at the site. If it had been in London or Russia or Ajerbijan or even New York there would be hundreds of people.

Originally posted by jbacaOther than the net, you can't find anything on this tournament...I blame fide for their continued inability to run a chess organization...it was like this years ago...I read that there are hardly any spectators at this event...someone said there were five people at game four...the match being held in Libya was a bad idea...the knockout system has its flaws...however, the chess has been exciting...Adams - Rustam match has been fighting chess which is fun to watch...five games only one draw...oh, well. whoever wins (I'm hoping Adams) and plays Kasparov I wish them well...hopefully a little more publicity...if Adams does move on, I hope the match will be played in London...that would create some excitement!!
One issue I have is that you cant follow the game while its happening, noticed Adams tied it up in game 5. Where's espn when you need it lol! this is a world championship folks.
Then we wonder why Fishcher complained in 72'chess needs more not less promotion, How about someone like Howard Cosell-just kidding
but still....players should exercise their power to influence the way things run in Fide. Without top rated players what do you have....
This whole process should be perceived as exciting on the surface for those unfamiliar with the more nuanced realities of chess. Isnt chess to be played in Athens this summer this should be leading that!
Off the Soapbox for now
