I still wonder when should I think over 20 minutes? extremely complicated middle-gaem position is all that comes to my mind. but often I dont get into such positions (as you might remember, I am that "boring as hell" pirc-player...)
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5+ Nc6 4. c3 a6 5. Ba4 b5 6. Bc2 Nf6 7. d4 cxd4 8. Nxd4
Bb7 9. Qe2 e5 10. Nf3 Be7 11. O-O O-O 12. Rd1 Qc7 13. Bg5 Rac8 14. Nbd2...........

How long would you spend on that and what would you play?

i would spend 1-2 minutes and play Nf1...

in a blitz game I would spend 2-4 seconds and play Nf1...

oh sorry , is it black to move?? then I would most probably just play h6 or Nd7.
in a blitz game I would play Nd4 though...

have to go now...keep this thread alive..

I spent 25 mins OTB working out Nd4 and still didnt get to the bottom of the total chaos that happens. I had to win this game at all cost (club game) I normally would have gone with Nd4 but choose a safer line and played Nd8, Ne6, Nc5.

You cant of possibly worked out all the Nd4 lines in that time 🙂

One of the things I find takes quite a bit of working out is when you have a choice of which rook to move on the back rank ie maybe you have a choice of Rfd1 or Rad1, can take quite a bit of working out before deciding which one is best, especially if its clear both the e and the c files could come into use in the near future.

well, he's already crossed 2050 in blitz and an inch away from 2000 standard (did the town championships go well, jusu?), and I have no idea of your official rating, so maybe your rating difference explains the difference in used time? just guessing here... and I've seen jusu outperforming 2150's on CTS by a hundred point margin, so he is really quite strong tactically.

I've been wondering about that blitz-thing though, as it seem vast majority gains almost nothing from lots of blitz. but every now and then there seems to be someone who does. they must blitz somehow differently from the rest of us, maybe playing some kind of 'real chess' even in minimal amount of time? I myself tend to wing it, disregarding everything I've learned about chess. needless to say, I suck massively at blitz. :-/

2050 in blitz or rapid play? Theres a difference. If he is 2000 FIDE elo slow im even more shocked than I was before that he thinks 5 mins on a move is to much. Certainly his rating here tends to show in slower games that his play doesnt hold up to the 2000 mark.

2058 at G/5 I believe. finnish national rating 'selo' is just pretty much even with fide elo. -I think he meant not usually taking more than a couple of minutes on a tactical move, but up to 20 minutes in a critical middlegame position?

he doesn't really play here, just comes for the forums I guess. but if you check out his games, you'll see that he drew against trains44, who was kicked for engine use. (which btw makes bowman's games against trains44 pretty impressive also...)

did you win it? 🙂 Nd8 followed by Ne6 looks like a pretty good plan too...

and you are right. I didnt calculate all the Nd4 lines. I just worked out the main lines. in a real G/90 OTB game I would spend little more, but definitely not more than 5-10 minutes.

and yeah...I scored pretty well in the town championships 🙂

THe best guys in my two chess clubs must have followed your advice--they're unkempt pigs! And a few (age 35+) still live at home with their parents. So, you could try that approach.

YES; they just need some lye and a hose...and maybe a comb...and a new set of clothes so they stop wearing the same sweatpants all the time.

Finland have a rating for just G/5?
