My scope in chess is quite limited; with the White I always open with 1.d4 and my opening preparation has to do with a repertoire against Chigorin/ Albin/ QGA/ QGD Tarrasch-Orthodox-Slav-SemiSlav/ Indian defences/ Budapest/ Benko/ Chech-Modern Benoni/ Modern-Dutch-Endlish. I never tried another opening, ie 1.e4, because untill now I cannot understand in full all the concepts of 1.d4.
With the Black I play solely KID against 1.d4 and Scheveningen against 1.e4. I am 45 years old and in my whole life I played with the Black only these two systems, however there are still positions I cannot evaluate and issues that I am unable to comprehend; this game, chess, it gives me great satisfaction and great disapointment. It seems that I am unable to overcome mediocrity;

Don't put yourself down. Sounds like you enjoy your chess but
don't think you can play the flashy (unsually unsound combinations).
Go on the blitz site 5.05 and try an Alpin gambit like Korch did.
If 2.Nf3 then play 2...Nc6 and next move shut your eyes and play 3...e5.
So you lose a dozen games and win one.
The one you will win will be an uforgetable cracker.
Play 1.e4 and 2 d4 against everything - sac the d-pawn and pretend
it's against the rules to take it back. Have some fun throwing pawns
and pieces against your opponent.
Play one touch openings. (you are only allowed to move every piece
once until you have castled and both rooks can see each other -
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR OPPONENT PLAYS!).
After the two Rooks can see each you play chess.
Rejoice in the new you.
