The post that was quoted here has been removedI gave the Scotch consideration - still am a bit, but don't think I like the positions as much as the Ruy ones - things are more open generally, but still...eh. *unsure*
BTW: It's a very similar situation with me and the KG, I don't necessarily think white is any better in the Ruy, but it's definitely more sound and I want something that I can play without risk as early as move two. I can still call on the KG whenever I need it and probably get a pretty nice position.
I couldn't help but think of Pokemon when I wrote about being able to call on the KG, almost gave me a chuckle. 😉
Originally posted by cmsMasterI have hardly ever faced the Scotch OTB. Here quite a few people play it but with assistance from my trusty openings book I seem to be okay as black. Haven't kept separate stats.

Originally posted by Dragon FireI think most 1...e5 players neglect studying the Scotch and the KG which are both major options for white and instead elect to study only Ruy lines and Two Knights (Or GP) lines.

Originally posted by cmsMasterHmm, it looks like most of the content is actually in his yahoo group. Anyway Brian Wall is a USCF life master who plays the "fishing pole" against the Roy.
What am I supposed to be seeing here?
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc3
3. Bb5 Nf6
4. 0-0 Ng5
Someone else posted something about it in this forum a while ago, but I'm too lazy to search.
Originally posted by jonzzzzWow, you're an idiot. As far as I'm concerned the Ruy is no better than the KG. I just wanted to add something to my repertoire that didn't require playing a pawn down from the start - even if there is compensation a lot of times. The Ruy has the advantage of being super solid, so I can play it if I am playing in a game where I don't like taking many risks, I also just generally have a hard time playing only three openings - so I've added one. In any case I think I probably play much better with the KG, and have a better chance of winning with it. For example - against an opponent who had just beat me two games in a row....
CMS master you finally found out the Kings gambit sucks and the rruy lopez is the best. I am very proud of you.

Smashed.
Most people usually kick 3.Bb5 away with 3...a6 and then maybe 4...b5. I tend to just consolidate after that & it can get very complex.
I much prefer KGA. I usually play knight's as I think it's slightly safer.
Have real problems against 3...d6 4.d4...g5 defending f4 & giving black counter-play as here : Game 2615140
I know this is a thread about the Spanish Opening, but what's the best play against that KGA defence? I'd really appreciate any help.🙂

Originally posted by cmsMasterOk, I did a search of the forums for the King's Gambit, here are some things that showed up and are possibly worthwhile...
