But why should you be paying those authors money, Mike, for teaching you a game that you love? In a fair world those books would be free.

and they are:

http://www.geocities.com/chess_sharewith_us/

just download them right of the net 😀

I have lots of other chess ebooks, I downloaded them at kazaa. All you have to do is search for chess under ebooks and leave the machine searching for an hour.

So you really think that people will continue to research and write good quality chess resources when they barely sell any copies?

I know for a fact that there was not one great creative work in history (books, music, films, art, whatever) that was made for the money. Artists create what they do because they want to express themselves.
Nimzowits did not write My System with money in his mind. He wanted to share "his system" and what he learned about the game with the rest of the world. And I encourage everyone to download his work instead of buying it and funding the kapitalist piggs that exploit his legacy.

Say the many chessplayers (we're talking titled players, GM's included) who make their living, not from tournament winnings, but from books and such can no longer support themselves doing that. They have to go get jobs. They stop releasing books. There are no more opening study books, no more tactical resources, no more player game collections. They have less time to devote to chess overall. Their performances at tournaments suffer. The gap between the professional and the amateur widens.

Buy the goddamn books you filthy thief.

You don't seem to understand what I am saying...
90% of these chess books are writen only for the money. Take reassess your chess, its a complete ripoff from nimzowits my system there's not tiny bit of new information in it. Even YOU could have written it. Why pay the autor for ripping off Nimzowits and not even mentioning it.

There's not one great piece of art that was not made because it was not subsidised.

If you consider the information in a book to be not worth buying, when why read it at all?
Following on, if you consider a book to be worth reading, then why would one not wish the author, and the people who are distributing it for him/her, to receive money for their services?

If you're going to nick stuff, at least be honest about it. I always am.

However you justify it it's still theft.

I know an author - they don't care if you read the book it's the royalties that pay the rent 😉

I'd strongly recommend that you choose 1 book and read that before buying another - I go through phases of buying lots of books at once and as a consequence have a pile of unread books. Get one book on the endgame.

I do consider the original information in a book like my system worth buying. But I would buy it to support the author. But now that nimzowits is long dead I see no reason to buy the book instead of downloading it. And I do not consider a book like reassess your chess worth buying because the information in it is not from the author.
If someone painted the mona lisa all over again do you think they would hang it in the museum?
