Why don't you subscribe and find out?
1. I can tolerate ads when they don't debilitate a site.
2. A site must earn my trust before it gets my money.
3. I subscribe to several excellent chess sites, and play free at others. Pogo needs to show me something of value.
4. My mother told me about blackmail. Didn't yours? Paying to avoid something as easily blocked as DoubleClick is senseless.
Then enjoy the ads.
I know quite a few people who have subscribed there and they have had no trouble whatsoever.
But you are one of those paranoid fellows I suppose who believes a company with over 7k employees and yearly revenue in the billions wants to fleece your bank account.
Blackmail?
How funny.

Just discuss the issues without sharing your unfounded intellectual and psychological hypotheses.
I'm working on getting into pogo to learn more about its popularity. I had a game window open once so far, but the room host was non-responsive to the request to let me join.
BTW, only companies with no revenue seek to fleece my bank account. That's the nature of the market system.

I know my firewall has no trouble, I never had to redo the settings, at least I don't recall doing so, and I know my wife never has because she is more computer illiterate than I am.
Shes been subscribed there for several years, my mother longer, my aunt longer and my sister in law longer still.
None of these people have ever had any troubles nor irrational fears that pogo had dubious intentions towards them in any way shape or form. I research internet sites before I give them my money, or before my family frequents them. Pogo met my standards.
I recall long ago when my wife first became interested in the site the non-responsive messages. I believe it had more to do with the amount of people accessing the room. The rare occasions when I play there, I never receive that message, however when I do play games there, its generally early in the morning.

You need some manners.
Does the term irrational fear distress you?
I cant help that. I simply find it irrational to believe that a company such as EA has any dubious intent towards its patrons.
However, that does not mean that some of the ads there do not.
Much like I was told at this site, "...if you're so worried about it, just subscribe."
Well, Wulebgr. I really have no contentions left with you, and never had anything serious to contend with you anyway. I even agree that pogo is not a site to consider if looking for serious chess. I don't believe anyone here intended to make that contention, perhaps I was mistaken. However, I certainly never did.
So, I will now go back to making bad moves at this site.
Adios, and good luck wherever you do play chess!
Originally posted by WulebgrIf you want tough games there try only accepting games from orange's and purples. Red's are the strongest. If you only challenge blue's or green's then you will more than likely have an easy game.
It took awhile, but I got a game going at pogo.
The first game, I found myself in a lost position in a middlegame. I tried some things, then quickly dispatched my opponent in the rematch.
The next player was awful. Most of the second graders I taught the game to last week give me a better game.
==================================
beginner(blue): 1500 and under
Intermediate(green): 1501-1600
Advanced(Orange): 1601-1750
Expert(Purple): 1751-2000
Master(Red):2000 plus

I'm "Pavlo43" on that site.
I actually find it fun playing there. And many of my opponents; Oranges and sometimes purples can be very challenging. The difference between redhotpawn and pogo is that one is blitz and one is not. Since people seem too keep comparing the two. Some days ya just want a fast game and not have to wait 1 day per move.

See http://www.angelfire.com/poetry/wulebgr/corr.htm (my correspondence reviews) and http://www.angelfire.com/poetry/wulebgr/reviews.htm (my live site reviews).
Although my live site reviews have not been updated in two years, there is very little that I would change if I updated them today. Notice that Pogo gets (dis)honorable mention in a headnote with a link to a page much older than mine, and still generally accurate.
I'll look for you, Pavlo43, if and when I'm back at Pogo.
