A fake Christian implies there are real ones, a real one requires something that makes one real and others not, that is Jesus Christ in them and they will be obeying Him, living for Him, loving God and each other. The fake can be doing all manner of religious things, none of which can save them, we are only saved in Christ Jesus by what He did for us not what we do to earn His salvation.

It may be a safe bet that false Christians would fall inline with false Christs.
Another pointer as to who the false Christians may be, has to do with perseverance. Jesus said that the crowns would be given to those that endure to the end: "But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved." This implies that an indication of a true Christian is one who will be sav ...[text shortened]... rist.

“We shall know them by their fruits”
Is the simple solution, and the only one supported in biblical text.
I can only assume this is too simple for some people who seek to differentiate using “beliefs” which of course is cultism.

@divegeester saidInteresting statement by Jesus but I think the whole thing has to be taken to get the full meaning. Your quote refers specifically to detecting false prophets . The next section deals with Jesus's true followers and the last one deals with what the true followers do. Here is the whole passage :

False Prophets : Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Mouth Worshippers : Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
What the True followers do :Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (Matthew 7:15-27 KJV)
I would say that Jesus is telling people :
- False Prophets can be detected by their fruits ie do they produce prophecies that come to pass.
- The "Lord Lord", or mouth worshippers do not necessarily get eternal life but those who do the will of God will
- Whoever keeps the commandments are wise, those who dont are foolish.

@KellyJay saidThe only salvation anyone has is due to the fact that it's all only make believe.

But as far as the universal play goes, we reap what we sow. In other words, it's all fun and games, but with the benefit of seeming reality. Yes, the punishments and rewards dished out on JUDGEMENT DAY will also seem very real, as they should, since we are playing a wicked game of life and death. But an immortal being can take all the good and all the bad without as much as a batting of an eye.
Echoing the divine words of my Master:
"Wherefore my counsel is, that we hold fast ever to the heavenly way and follow after justice and virtue always, considering that the soul is immortal and able to endure every sort of good and every sort of evil. Thus shall we live dear to one another and to the gods, both while remaining here and when, like conquerors in the games who go round to gather gifts, we receive our reward."

Take a stand.
@PettyTalk saidBring on the religious brownshirts?
Well, if we cannot know who is who, then the next best thing would be to list those who seem/pretend to be one, or the other.
That's your answer?
@moonbus saidAnd thus he'd be wrong there, too.

Jesus, born a Jew, died a Jew.
Paul, the first Christian and possibly the last genuine one. Judging by his letters upbraiding all the churches of Greece, he seemed to think everyone but himself was doing it wrong.
Paul never met Jesus.
Maybe he was the first "third-party" Christian.
@PettyTalk saidHow about those who straddle both sides of the fence?
I take no credit for the following, which is a brief bullet list that was compiled from various sources on the internet.
Genuine Christians:
Always Carry a Lighter: Because they know that even in the darkest times, a spark of hope can ignite a flame of positivity.

He was talking about "those people over there, not me".

@Suzianne saidWhy would I be involved? If you are living life as you see fit and you are the master of what is right and good then you are making it up as you go. If you force scripture to say what you think it should instead of what it says, you are making it up as you go. If your basing your beliefs surrounding anything hopefully that anything is the truth, and not lies.
Who's to say who is "making it up"?
You?
