@ghost-of-a-duke saidYou can if you want, you can the dog next door named George, God if you want.
I'm actually going to capitalize all 'Gods' from now on out of respects for all religions.
God is the one and only God, while god is just one of many gods none standing out over the rest.
@wolfgang59 saidYeah, correct. Two exception. Thanks. I was making the point that the heavens which we see are 99% Milky Way and not the universe. Imagine what is going on out there. Christians do not like to think that God is involved in creation of other worlds with life. Apparently that conflicts with some of their doctrines, and beliefs about who or what God is.
The "nearby" Magellanic clouds are outside the Milky Way.
And Andromeda is way off!
@kellyjay saidGreat question. But how do you know it has an edge? It seems every time they improve telescopes they see farther then before.
Without ever really giving it a lot of thought, I think I always considered it eternal in size. God creating it could have been endless or not; it would have been whatever He wanted. The Big Bang with Einstein, Hubble, and Hawking I have to conclude it started expanding at the start; therefore, it had to have a leading edge of its expansion. Since it has a leading-edge, it i ...[text shortened]... not something that can be judged by size within the universe either.
Like a said just a thought.
I kind of understand the shift in light with space stuff but do we really know how that all works? Maybe we see it in the only way we can which is with our eyes and what machines we invent, but what if this is only scratching the surface of what maybe we can't see in regards to light and distances and if things really appear to be moving away or coming at us? We see physical things but maybe there are even more unseen things that only Jehovah and other spirit beings see that we will never see?
Dun't know but who on earth does????
@galveston75 saidIf it is expanding and it had a beginning it has a leading edge, meaning if you reversed time, it would end up in a single point going backwards. From a single point going away it would have a leading edge no matter how far away or fast it was moving.

@kellyjay saidBut are you sure? They say so but are you sure their sure?

@galveston75 saidIt doesn't matter if they are sure or not, it is what it is.
But are you sure? They say so but are you sure their sure?
@kellyjay saidBut what if it is what it isn't? Lol, just kidding.

@kellyjay saidYep, I've allowed you to get away with that way of thinking for too long, the notion that only the Christian God is worthy of the capital G.
You can if you want, you can the dog next door named George, God if you want.

I fully accept you believe your God is the only true God, but then a Hindu will say the same about the 'Gods' they believe in.
As an atheist, I don't believe any of these Gods are real. They are equal in their fabrication and so I will treat them equally in the way I describe them.

As an atheist could you explain if you are of any more value in this world then say a maggot?
Are you and a maggot on the exact same level of worth?
And if not, why not ?
@sonship saidNice.

@galveston75 saidVery funny. 🙂

“To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true; so that he who says of anything that it is, or that it is not, will say either what is true or what is false.” – Aristotle

@hakima saidSo sorry for your loss. I lost my mom a little over two years ago and it still hurts every minute.
When I was 11 or 12, my dad worked for JPL on a small part of the Voyager spacecrafts. He was allowed (or maybe he just took the liberty) to etch his name on one of the crafts. He passed away last year and I can hardly imagine that something with his name on it is over 13 billion miles away...and he is not here...
The universe, finite or infinite, is beyond my ken.
But I think your dad's name on that spacecraft is awesome. I would be honored to have my mom's name on something like that. Take care....
