I'm inclined to differentiate between a flood story, such as one might find in North or South American cultures, and a flood that covers all land and even mountains, which generally seem to stem only from Mediterranean cultures. Sure, everyone has a flood story because ancient peoples absolutely and without exception needed a source of water, and if that water was a river or ocean then it was going to rise to great heights sooner or later. Again, that's not the kind of flood that the OT describes.
Originally posted by karoly aczelooo i have a nice one about the sphynx. some say it wasn't built by the egyptians at all, that it was originaly a statue of a lion built by atlanteans. and that the egyptians simply carved the head to that of a human. this way they explain why the head is so much smaller than it should be for a body of that size.
WE could extend this thread to include other flood myths...
Apparently there is water erosion around the base of the sphynx.
(I'll get some more info...)
Originally posted by menace71dude i already told you, for a farmer dude the world consisted of his patch of land and where he needed to go to sell or give his goods. it is perfectly reasonable that a flood covering all mesopotamia (from the tigrus and euphrates) would seem to them like the whole world was flooded.
There are a ton of flood stories from cultures all over the world. Just google & see LOL
My theory is that a flood really did occur and these are remnants of the true story.
Manny
yes there was a flood. in fact there were several. some severe. but you don't really believe those people riddled with supperstitions to be accurate and objective historians, do you? they were shepherds and farmers and most of those myths are exactly that, myths.
Originally posted by ZahlanziI saw some pretty good research that suggested that shpynx indeed did have a different head. The origonal head was concluded to be that of a jackal. A powerful guardian in egyptian mythology. Apparently some looters came and destroyed the origonal head which was recarved later,,

The body of the sphinx has those long paws(like the jackal)
The positioning would fit in with egyptian mythology-the jackals being a symbolic guardian to the pyramids.
Also i thought atlantis was supposed to be somwhere else.
Are you having me on? I am being serious.
You got me started with the 'head being too small' thing ,on which I agreed.
Now tell me. Do you really believe in Atlantis.
(congrats on 700. You deserve it)
Originally posted by menace71until they find conclusive proof, we can only speculate. as far as i know, the only things suggesting the existence of a large island civilisation in the atlantic are some vague lines from plato's dialogues and some other references.
There's one for us Atlantis myth or fact?
Manny
so the myth is that there was an island civilisation in the atlantic that predated egyptians and mesopotamians and it got destroyed by some earthquake/volcanic erruption
