Ha ha ha.... Hansen & Lawrenson - the only centre-back pairing that were 'protected' by their whole midfield... neither of 'em had any bottle. Souness ran that team and distributed justice.
However, only one of them is a decent pundit
Originally posted by Angry BoyFor once I agree with Angry Boy, even though they had Souness protecting them they were both class acts and I think Hansen is the best footballing pundit.

Most overrated player though has to be Bellamy, how managers can possibly think about making 12m bids for him after another pathetic seasonis just unbelievable.
Not only is he a very avaerage player he is bad for team spirit at every club he has been at.

In my opinion Alan Hansen didn't know how to mark a player properly which is why he had to make so many last ditch tackles... I'll concede that Lawro could play a bit...
It was their lack of bottle which I found so disappointing - they were nowhere to be seen when the going got rough - that's when Souness would step in.
Personally speaking, as pundits, they both get right up my nose!

Having Souness, who was 70% the player Keane was protecting them would have made Hansen look a much better player, I remember he could pick out a good pass, but if he ever got past the half way line Mr Blobby would be more productive.
He is the best pundit though because he is not afraid to slag off Liverpool and makes entertaining commets, sometimes correct sometimes not.
We all know the most famous one about not winning anythng with kids.
Is there a more famous quote from a footballing pundit?
Originally posted by Angry BoyNow come on, if you think Souness was closer to Keane than 70% (both as a player and apparently as a manager), then you are proposing a case for Souness being the most overrated player and it is you that is the commedian😉
You should be a comedian
Remember a very good player can also be a very over rated player (see Souness, Dalglish, Hyppia, Alonso, Owen, Hansen? and Beardsley) as examples for starters.

Keane wouldn't have lived with Souness.
Souness was a hard man, when it was a man's game.
Keane was a hard man after the fairies had infiltrated the sport.
...and please don't mention Keane as being a good manager when he's not even had a full season at it yet!!

-Scored goals.
-Unlimited stamina.
-Stood up to the manager, a real confrontational manager.
-Was man of match almost every game.
-Was the starting point of almost every United attack
-Remember Keane standing up to Viera in tunnel aganst Arsenal?
-Won everything including the treble where he dominated the midfield against Zidane and Davids against Juventus.
-Was the hardest man on the pitch and always dished out payback, remember the payback outragous foul against that muppet City player
Ok. I take it back Souness was awesome, but not quite the same class an Keane.
Souness as a player was awesome, the kind of player I would pay to watch no matter who he played with, but he was no Roy Keane.
Keane made Ireland into a decent International side, Souness did not do the same for Scotland.
Imageine a confrontation of Keane against Souness, I know who my money would be on, it would be quite a spectical though.
Yes the red mist has lifted and Souness was awesome, I would love to see a player with half his pashion and ability at United, but he was not at the same level as Roy Keane.
Originally posted by Rooney Once a BlueWe'll have to agree to differ...I'm not much of a Roy Keane fan, I think he was over-rated.

In the 1997 incident Keane was trying to hack down Haaland from behind, then had the cheek to blame him for the self-inflicted serious injury which followed. Granted Haaland shouldn't have had a go at him (on the floor) for what he thought was an attempt to avoid a booking by feigning injury. That wasn't exactly Keane's style! But let's not be deluded, Keane brought the injury upon himself.
After festering for almost 4 years about it, he then goes and commits one of the worst acts of thuggery seen on a football pitch as "revenge".
To use your own words (ROAB) very good players can still be overrated players. Roy Keane is one of the best examples of my lifetime.

From 1994 to 2003 he was consistently one of the top 2 midfield players in England and in the top 3 defensive holding midfield players in Europe.
I was a season ticket holder at United during this time and Keano got far more man of the match awards than any other player on the pitch, his ratio was almost 50% of games.
Almost every attack was started by him.
If you every meet SteveG, ask him how highly he rates Keane.
I didn't say I agree with what he did to Hyland, all I am saying is that he felt mocked when he was down inured and the next time he met him on the pitch he let him know who was the boss, many of the 60's 70's players kept 'payback' books.
The same goes for Viera, look for quotes from Viera, Zidane, Davids on just how good Keane was.
Probably in the top 2 United players of the last 25 years.
As for Souness, I only really remember that end years of his career, but from what I do remember he seemed to control the game but he also had quality all around him.
I'll I'm doing is going from what history says, people making comparisions on TV and you rarely if ever hear Sounesses name mentioned in the same context as Keane's.

Originally posted by Rooney Once a BlueSouness was at his peak between 81 & 84, and yes he was surrounded by talent. However (even as a Liverpool fan I can say) Lee, Whelan and Johnston were probably not as good individually as Beckham, Scholes and Giggs, so you could say Keane was surrounded by even greater quality. They were both leaders, enforcers and the driving force of their teams, but personally, I think Souness had more to his game going forward.
