Welcome to the fold, Eagles. I love the game and particularly the world cup.

You're not alone in being perplexed by fouls - most spectators and even referees are too with their different interpretations! Unfortunately, rugby has a myriad of rules and infrigements and they're being tweaked all the time in the interests of keeping the game flowing and o not going to take much to the game which will always be on the fringes next to gridiron.
Rugby is probably one of the most difficult sports to 'teach' people.

Glossary:
Breakdown refers to any time open play breaks down. This can be the ball carrier being tackled, or losing the ball when it's is passed to him.

Just a point or two, regarding penalties:
If the maul goes to ground and the ball is off the ground, the referee will generally call a scrum to the side going forward.
If a maul was formed and becomes static or goes to ground and the side carrying the ball couldn't get the ball out in a timely fashion, the scrum is awarded to the defending team. The 'use it or lose it' rule.

Offside.
Defending teams can also be offside. At an breakdown situation - rucks, mauls and set pieces (line-outs and scrums - although these have some special rules themselves), all defending players must stay behind the imaginary line created from the last feet of the defending teams' players involved at the breakdown.

Some more penalties:

If a player is in the air at any time trying to win the ball, no other player is allowed to play (tackle) that player.

If any player is guilty of unsportsman-like behavious, also referred to as a profesional foul. This is usually defending players trying to slow the ball down illegally at a breakdown, preventing an attacker from following up a kick or deliberately knocking a ball away when the attacking team looks like scoring.

Once you tackle someone, you are deemed out of play and youhave to get up to your feet before playing the ball or another attacking player.
Players must always be on their feet when attempting to play the ball.

If a team deliberately disrupts a scrum, they can be penalised. This is a very contentious area with much debate surrounding it, as the referee needs to interpret who the perpetrator was.

Once a player is tackled, he needs to place the ball (only if held in the tackle on the ground). If he holds onto the ball or makes any movement more than just placing the ball, he should be penalised.

Like buffalobill said, there are a myriad of rules governing play. There are sets of rules for every single facet of play, but once you start understanding the basics and watch some games, you will start to understand it.

What a n00b, I thought there was only one definition of a "hooker." 😀

A great game for Georgia, and I think they were quite unlucky not to have won. Congratulations to all Georgians.... you have a lot more to be happy about than us English!

They were unlucky not to have won, to be honest.

O'Gara's kicking was appalling. We showed a few signs, but if we play as sloppily as that against France and Argentina, we're not getting out of the pool.

Be very worried. I'm just watching France vs Namibia. The frogs started at a million miles an hour and picked up the pace, scoring at faster than a point a minute - 54 - 3 after 50 minutes. I think I'll go to bed rather than watch the slaughter.

One thing that's perplexing is that I have no idea what the fouls are. The whistle will blow and I have no idea what the infraction is even though I was probably looking right at it. I guess that will come in time.

I'm hoping by the time the next WC rolls around that the US wil ...[text shortened]... igence required. It just needs more exposure here and I think people would really go for it.
One of my best friends played rugby for 2 years for a club in Texas after school. His verdict was that the US could become an amazingly strong rugby force if rugby were a bit more publicized in the US.
The problem is that in american football you play the man more than the ball, but in rugby you get penalised for that.
It's really nice to finally see an american who don't describe rugby players as wussies.

On a good day France cam compete against the best in the world. I would not throw them away based on their performance against Argentina. They are still live contenders for the final.

It's the kind of performance that you'd expect when the pros play amateurs.

Not to say that I'm not worried, though.

i had a dream last night

france where playing ireland, france scored first but ireland where 14-10 up at halftime and had many chances to score in the second but france made it 14-13 and where looking like the better team

then i woke up.

not as strange as my dream the other night though, this big fish with huge teeth was trying to climb out of a river and up a concrete ramp to save its baby, who also had pretty big teeth. but i didn't know this and was trying to push the big fish back into the river, trying not to get bitten

very strange

Am i the only one who rate Sebastien Chabal as the most overrated player ever to set foot on a rugby field?
As a lock he would never be a Victor Matfield, and as a loose he would never be a Richie Mcaw. So what's the fuss about?

Very harsh red card against Namibia though I thought.

Thanks Ragnorak, Buffalo Bill, Crowley, for taking the time and effort to clarify some of the finer points of the game for me. I'll refer back here when the inevitable questions pop up.

It's really too bad that the US' best athletes will always go into other sports. I guess I'll have to cheer on another nation at the top level. Hmmm...who should I choose for my adopted nation?

If I were a little younger I'd give the game a go myself. I've found out there's a team not too far from me. I'm not averse to mucking it up at all. I recently had fusion surgery to neck vertabrae so I'd better just watch from the sidelines. lol

I need a team to follow!
