I agree that he's going on on a limb with any 2 of the three but for the home court advantage for African teams, but even then to get those three results approaches fanciful ideas about how much the home crowd and referrees will affect a game against such sound footballing nations as Germany, Italy, and the emerging US power. I think we'll see a relativ ...[text shortened]... er powers in the world. My bet's on a weak display of the home-court advantage for WC2010.
By your logic (and I use the word logic quite wrongly) if the World Cup was held in, say, Canada, then Mexico would have a home court advantage because they're on the same continent.
The only country that could benefit from any home court advantage would be South Africa, and I guarantee you that they'll throw it all away.

when was the last time a european crounty won the world cup outside of europe?
When was the last time Brazil won the world cup in Japan, USA, Mexico and Sweden? They've won it five times, but the fifth was in Chile so I guess that doesn't really count because it's on the same continent. Also, they didn't even win it when they hosted it themselves.
This is the first WC ever to be held in Africa, you can't compare advantages to the Cups held in Europe before it's even begun. The only home court factor of influence is going to be the blaring vuvuzelas which are going to prevent players from hearing the whistle and commentators are going to struggle.
There was the final of the Super 14 Rugby yesterday, held in Soweto. Many members of the crowd had brought vuvuzelas to the match, something rather uncommon in rugby. At one point in the game they panned over the crowd and there were people blowing their vuvuzelas and other people holding their hands over their ears and grimacing. The commentator stated that they were sitting in a closed commentary box and they couldn't even hear themselves speak. There will be A LOT more noise at the World Cup. This will be more of a home court deterrent than an advantage. Even the other African countries don't like it.
Originally posted by hopscotchi just asked a simple question, if you look back european teams always preform better when it's hosted in europe. now i'm not saying an african team will win the world cup, they won't but there will be a slight (if only mental) edge for them this year and i can see one of them reaching the quarters, maybe even the semis with a lot of luck like korea did. who knows.

they should ban the vuvuzelas outside of south africa games at the world cup. they made the confederations cup unwatchable.
Originally posted by hopscotchIf you look at the continent of host and continent of the winner then there's actually a pretty high correlation. I agree this seems like a strange fact, but there it is. Maybe it's jet lag, maybe it's something else or maybe it's just coincidence. But it's not outlandish to say that African nations have maybe an extra motivation for this one.

At least that's what I got from media (yes, I know, not the best source) but also some player interviews which agree with this perception.

which was why i was laughing.
ok so there is some wishful thinking on my behalf that they top the group with Germany in it, but in saying that its still not beyond them...so he who laughs last will laugh loudest.
and oh yeah...and Serbia were beaten the other day by New Zew Zealand, Socceroos have beaten teams like France, England and Netherlands, So they are quite capable of causing an upset.
