I've finished reading a book titles "Jazz" by Gary Giddins and Scott Deveaux.

It provides a unique variation to jazz history in that it focuses on how jazz eveoved into the various movements and the major players involved in that evolution. Very good, I believe.

Saw the Jazz Generations band last night. Featuring Jimmy Cobb (drummer on Kind of Blue) and Jimmy Heath (played with everyone). Sure these cats are old but they still got chops. They played All Blues in which Cobb was the drummer on the recording...magical. They had a trumpet player named Terrel Stafford who was quite impressive as well.

Actually, there was a lot more to Shepp than a "screaming avant-garde" player.

You can listen to excerpts of both "Trouble in Mind" and "Goin' Home" here. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Just hit "preview all songs". I have a preference for "Goin' Home", but they both feature some beautiful playing.

BTW, did you ever track down Miles' "Plugged Nickel"?

I have yet to find that recording. I did pick up Miles Ahead today.
