I'm also wondering whether there's a fundamental need for it. Seems like life without parole does the job just as nicely.

Nobody can be found 100% guilty (unless the US decides, without trial, that you are a bad guy), you don't want to punish people irreversably.
I don't like the idea of the State, a mad senial old KKK judge or a jury of my peers (like there are many atheist, communist, sex gods amongst juries anymore) having the power to kill me. Therefor, it stands, that I wouldn't wish the same on any other person either.
Thirdly, deciding that killing is wrong can't be inforced by killing. That's not the...uh... correct signal to be sending.
