@athousandyoung saidSacrifice individuals? I believe that people should be held responsible for their lack of maintaining health.
Why are you willing to sacrifice individuals in the name of “society”? You some kind of collectivist?
If people actually took care of themselves, most of the people who died would still be alive.
The rest? We all die.

No, I'm pretty sure the "Spanish" Flu pandemic of 1918 was caused by the war. Put troops into trenches for four years and you'll probably find they get sick. How else did it spread to Europe from central USA?
Oh, and for those keeping score at home, the Rt in Florida continues to plummet - down to .66. This is the third lowest of any state - only Louisiana and Mississippi are lower.
Hmmm. What do Florida, Mississippi and Louisiana have in common?
In case you're wondering, all deep south states are .88 or less, except North Carolina at .94 (whose climate is a bit more mid-Atlantic-y).

Impressive how the entire south decided to start wearing masks at once!

For a long time masks have been a tool, a simple and reasonable tool, for reducing transmission of respiratory viruses at times when transmission rates are very high. Places and time periods throughout history where mask usage was widespread have shown substantially lower community transmission.

@wildgrass saidI’ll stipulate to a useful device in limited circumstances when operated correctly. But the effectiveness, usefulness and necessity of which is wildly overstated for political reasons.

Health practitioners in hospitals, sure. Adults wearing KN95s in supermarkets, okay. 5 year olds wearing the same Superman cloth mask drooping down the nose for 47 consecutive days? Useless (at best)

@sh76 saidYou think 5 year olds are wearing masks for political reasons? Or that school boards and superintendants are requiring masks for political reasons?

It seems to me that the political football has gone the other way on masks. Elected state governors mandating against the use of masks in schools. I am not sure how that is overstating their usefulness?

@wildgrass saidHow likely is it that a 5 year old will die from covid?

Why should the 5 year old's development be retarded over nothing?

Yes. I think public health messaging with political overtones has convinced people that masking 5 years olds is necessary. I don't know what the motivations of the school administrators are, but I think they have been convinced by people with political motivations. I can't think of another logical explanation for people thinking masking 5 year olds with cloth masks in an era with safe and highly effective vaccines is a good idea.

I don't deny that the politics cuts both ways. There are knee-jerk anti-maskers just like there are knee-jerk pro-maskers. So the question is what is a proven good idea. And putting cloth masks on 5 year olds ain't it.
@sh76 saidThis was your explanation for why the 1918 N1H1 'flu is no longer a pandemic:
How did your post contradict mine?
Our immune systems are just used to it by now and so it's less deadly (though still deadly in some cases).
It's not our immune systems that have improved. Circumstances improved. That's why the Kansas "Spanish" Flu is no longer a pandemic.

What makes you think chickenpox wiped out indigenous Americans?
