"A disgrace is the only way to describe the reaction. Look, at the end of the day in a capitalist world, nothing is secure. Gate Gourmet is on the edge of going bust and the restructuring is the only solution to save the company. Yes it's unpleasant to be sacked - and it's happened to me in the past because my City employer thought it could make more money by firing me to hire someone else and I had a very miserable year of unemployment as a result and lost my home and family. But, you have to be strong and move on. I'm sorry for the Gate workers, but guys the world does not owe you a living."

This is a reaction on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/4143360.stm
to the striks over at Heathrow.
I moved over it and then, as I was shaving, I went back.
"The world does not owe me a living."
Can this be true?
(I'm strating to sound like her who does the monologues for Sex in the city...)
I was born onto the planet.
The planet supplies air, food, everything EVERY other creature in the world needs.
Yet I have to slave my guts out to get the bare minimum I need to survive on.
Ironically enough, in a hunter-gatherer culture I'd be pretty well off. I'm strong, fast and intelligent. I could probably catch an animal with a bit of practice quite fast. Light a fire and eat and shag most of the day.
Now I'm cooped up 8 hours a day in an office slaving to make someone else richer (someone who doesn't need to work those 8 hours of manual boredom 5x a week) and...AND...I should be happy I've got a job!
I do think the world owes me a living. I certainly don't owe my living to the capitalist pigs who abuse me!
Originally posted by shavixmirAs you say, with a bit of practice you could catch an animal, so you acknowledge that it is you that will be putting in the effort. That is the case with most other organisms on this planet, they put in some effort.

If a lion decides not to bother hunting anymore, the world isn't going to deliver a four course meal into its mouth. If an oak doesn't grow roots, the world will let it die.
The world is just there, it doesn't owe anyone or anything on it a living or anything else. The planet has a huge number of resources that we and every other organism tap into to a greater or lesser extent, so like EVERY other creature, the planet supplies everything you need.
I'm not saying you have to be happy with the way you have to earn your living, just that it is not the world's responsibility. The world would get by just as well without you, me or any other creature on it.
[i]No, the world owes you nothing. You have a choice. You can choose to make the best of what you have, whether that be here in America, or there in Europe, or somewhere in Africa.

Consider yourself one of the luckier ones. If you have had the opportunity to go to college, consider yourself even more lucky. At least you're not LITERALLY fighting for your life every day, in some god-forsaken place, realizing that every day could be your last. Like people in Africa, for example, fighting malnutrition on a daily basis. Just trying to get by every day without dying from disease or famine. I know I sound like some preacher, but guess what? It's true man. As much as I hate to say it, those preachers have a point. We, (and I mean those of us lucky enough to be born where we CAN have an education and "make something of ourselves", as the old cliche goes) have opportunities that others only dream of. And guess what?
That capitalist pig DOES make more than you for less work. Deal with it. If "climbing up the corporate ladder" is not your thing, fine. Do your 9-5, go to the pubs/clubs/sporting arenas on the weekends, have fun with your friends...... and when your vacation time comes up, try visiting a poorer country. It really puts things in perspective. đ

You made the choices leading you to that office you sit in today .. unhappy. Deal with it. If you want it different, make it different. You settled for the robot-job in the office and you're not happy. The other guy decided to shag for awhile then go hunting. After he has his dinner and shags some more, he'll go to sleep happy. You on the other hand .. er .. aah .. you'll be you. unhappy.

I have a distateful feeling that you are all a bunch of puppets who live the lives you are told to live and not to question your situations.
I see a distinct differene between hunting for a few hours then eating and shagging and functioning within a system that controls your every movement and makes you feel guilty if you don't want to particpate.

People generally work too much for too little (poverty is man-made). Bottom-line cynicism is sucking out our brains. It's the War of the World!

Please dont assume that we're all "puppets". I certainly dont assume that you're a lazy, complaining, socialist whiner, who will never be content with his life as long as there is someone who has a better life than him....
So tell us. What WOULD it take for you to be "happy", since the "system who controls your every movement" doesnt do it for you.
And by the way, I wouldnt feel guilty if I didnt participate. I dont mind participating, though. I like to have food on the table.

I thought you put this in the Debates Forum for a debate, not to be fawned over for your wise words.

I see you as a loser/whiner, a drag on humanity .. a buzzkiller
I used the hunter/shagger reference because you did in your origional post. The hunter/shagger decided to live his life the way he did and is happy. You, on the other hand apparently chose to attempt to "function within a system that controls your ever move and MAKES YOU feel guilty if you don't want to participate"
From that statement I take it that you couldn't bear to "feel guilty" by going off hunting and shagging ... so you sold out your manhood rather than "feel guikty."
Weak.
Here's a clue .. No one can "make you feel guilty", you do that all by yourself.
I don't see much reason for you to go on. Please go out in the woods and shoot yourself .. the constant whining about your victimhood is unmanly.
