$35 million x 48,571 =~ $1.7 trillion
whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa.

$35 million is the cost of ONE F16. And I looked it up, the cost can go from $12 M to $35 M, depending.

The $1.7 T is the cost of ALL crafts PLUS maintenance for the life of the crafts where it costs $36,000 per hour to run one.
Do the math there to see why $1.7 T is NOT the cost of one craft.

A single Air Force F-35A costs a whopping $148 million. One Marine Corps F-35B costs an unbelievable $251 million.
A lone Navy F-35C costs a mind-boggling $337 million. Average the three models together, and a “generic” F-35 costs $178 million.

Sheeesh!

I have enjoyed this thread, I learned a lot.

Let's try to keep it to F-35, or at least military spending.

Man, you should have seen what $1.7 T could have bought. Staggering.

'Twas just a simple point of comparison, not an indictment of tax bracketing.

I guess you are right that the F-35 program was successful if the goal is to transfer $1.7 trillion of US wealth from taxpayers to defense contractors. Should we feel safe now or is more required?
.............Ever notice that many retired MILITARY guys
go to work for DEFENSE CONTRACTORS?

You might have missed the point of the comparison. kmax87 was trying to argue that the F-35 program was a "value proposition" because it had a 20:1 kill ratio vs the F-16. But on a "per bird" basis it was not 20x more expensive. However, if you want to argue about the value of a dollar this comparison absolutely needs to include the cost of the program itself. I think if you add that in then any possible value of the F-35 goes away.

I still can't envision a modern war in which we turn around and say "oh, i see now, that's why we wanted to spend almost $2 trillion to load up a jet with 1980s outdated technology". 38% of all US bridges are in critical need of replacement but we let them rot while using $100 bills as toilet paper. Other than burning money for heat or losing pallets of cash in the desert (which our military still does), as a single program this is the largest waste of money in the history of the world.
