Well it's not always paranoia, though I'll concede that with some folks that may be the issue. Don't people in other countries ever go hunting? Or camping? Or how about just shooting at a range???
Unless someone has tried target shooting or hunting, they shouldn't comment on whether it is necessary or has a purpose.
Unless you have experienced an immediate danger, including isolation in a city or anywhere else where the police don't respond for a half hour, you shouldn't comment on gun ownership. I've personally sat crouched on the porch in a philly neighborhood with a handgun while a couple of jackasses shot in the air while looking for a rival drug dealer. The police didn't show up for over half an hour. They try not to get in a confrontation because if they wind up shooting one of the bastards they're paraded on TV as being a racist or being corrupt. If someone randomly showed up in your house tonight while your children were asleep, gun ownership would probably sound like a good idea. I suggest that anyone who is against gun ownership at least try shooting once or twice, just to get an understanding on what they hate before judging it more.

And yeah...we go camping. Generally a beer opener will do though. Never needed a gun.

Maybe you could add men wearing skirts to your list.
