Being as optimistic that there may exist a path to cut the Gordian knot as any time in the last year? I think so.
Look, I despise Netanyahu. Not because he's incompetent; he's clearly not. But because he only knows one language. He doesn't do subtle. He doesn't do conciliatory. Sure there's a time for war, but there's also a time for peace. There's a time for self-defense but there's also a time for negotiations and compromise. That's what he doesn't get. He never really has since his resurgence after Olmert's peace initiative fell through (in the 90's he was a little different).
But given Netanyahu's weaknesses, short of bouncing him from power in favor of someone who actually has both types of diplomatic skills (and I don't really know who that is right now - I was hoping for Lapid, but he seems to have faded away), what's actually happening is probably as good as can be expected under the circumstances.
