If my better half were better than I was at chess and she wouldn't have to be really good to do that. I would love her teaching me where I was going wrong in my games. I've already been told to slow down my games by a higher rated payer on this site, it would probably jump my rating up. I do have a bad habit of moving too quickly, which is hard to break. I have noticed when I play slower I do better a lot of the time.

So in answer to the question by Suzianne which I missed I would not be embarrassed at all. In fact she is getting interested in the game. Learning how the pieces move for now. I know a few openings/defences fairly well I can show her. Perhaps down the road she will be showing me things. I'd be thrilled about it.

at the ripe old age of 22 i knew nothing of chess but one night long ago whilst newly married and so skint we couldnt afford a tv my wife taught me chess she drew the board on paper and we made the chess men out of the kids leggo (believe me it can be done) not sure if black played as white it was a makeshift board I soon took to the game but like most things life took over and my dream of beeing a grandmaster dwindled, now I am lucky if I can beat my grandkids.

Isn't an appeal to display less (or no) fear or weakness also a gendered social stereotype?

"Act like a man!" usually is an appeal to display less (or no) fear or weakness.
"Act like a lady!" is a demand to conform to a gendered social stereotype.

These are similar gendered social stereotypes are they not?

Demand is a strong word - it is interesting you used appeal for men and demand for women.

Badge,
Thanks for sharing your story about your chess beginnings. Kids today are very smart and learn things very quickly. A great game for them to learn.

VR,

Do you believe that being a man is to go above and beyond in supporting a wife who has left you for another guy and kids who will have nothing to do with you?

Personally, I believe that modern society's values no longer support what you said. A better description is what I saw written on this site years and years ago...

I pay my taxes for the social programs that support the girl I might get pregnant and her kid, so I have met my moral obligaiton.

That would be a question for a woman/man with more knowledge on the subject of a man and woman not together anymore and where it appears in your case paying child support. Sounds like some counselling is needed in your case.

I am truly sorry to hear about your situation. It is a sad thing to go through I am sure.

It is not my situation. It is purely theoretical.

Sounds like you are unwilling to directly answer my question.

Counceling if the woman in question is living with another man, perhaps married to the other man?

It is a common enough scenerio in modern society, so I was just wondering if your old school beliefs would still apply to this not uncommon situation.

So you you were just putting forward a hypothetical situation?

One would have to know all the circumstances not just one side of the story.

There would have to be a reason why the children wouldn't have nothing more to do with the biological father?

The reason could be that the guy was out working most of the time and the wife stayed at home raising the kids. The hand the rocks the cradle. Given that situation the kids would be greatly influenced by the wife's influence. Some people grow up in families where one parent tries to be the favorite parent and make the other parent the bad guy.

Nice to know you do not believe what you said to be absolute, but a matter of situation. I appreciate the answer.

Its great 'Being a man'. Apart from:
More chance of dying as a result of violent crime, killed in war, committing suicide, being in prison, being in a mental hospital, living on the streets, and doing worse in school.
And being killed or maimed in an industrial accident.

Certainly a different outlook on "Being a man"!

Sounded like lashing out to me, not 'theoretical' or 'hypothetical' at all.
