That may be it, but I firmly believe that we know that we don't know and yet there exists a need to stifle this knowledge--- it makes us so uncomfortable--- with a frantic search for happiness.

One of our poets/philosophers hit the nail on the head when he said:

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation."
Suggesting: 1) That there may be an acute awareness (as in, I know I stink at chess); 2) That this awareness equates with flunking out due to ignorance; 3) That this recognition of gaps in knowledge or critical areas of ignorance poses threatening challenges to the psyche; 4) That this considerable and possibly escalating discomfort ratchets our sensibilities away from cognitive self esteem and emotionally defined comfort zones; 5) That in this context of fragmentation... a vacuum of ignorance and volitional impotence in correcting it result in a locked in preference for distraction, diversion, stimulation and sublimation?

It may seem like an awful lot of wrestling for what appears to be a decisive pin, regardless of any employed defense, I think you've etch-a-sketched the basic moves. Anger sets in as the realization of the self's treacherous implosion becomes evident, angry even at its own anger.

Tragedy.

Gradual process.... irrespective of gender, social status, intelligence

quotient, overt respectability, health, age... and potentially suicidal?

Suicide seems to be the painless answer.

To clarify... days on earth shortened; dying at an accelerating daily rate, without plateau, as opposed to a point in time event.

Footnote: Myth relating to cognitive cancer in context to be debunked: 'In the land

of the blind, the one eyed thinking man isn't king. In a best case scenario, he may

be a member of the deposed royal family... now persecuted by the blind and angry

court jester with the most vicious dogs, who reigns without a crown as interim king'.
