I wouldn't go as far as saying that. I would say drums are necessary, and people should give credit where credit is due.
Only joking.
Of course there is a big difference between a drummer and a drum machine.
You only have to punch information into a drum machine once.

Our lead guitarist and I (vocals and rythymn) sometimes did small party gigs without the drummer and bass player.. We used a small drum machine for some numbers but hated to over do it.
Did gig with a keyboard player once! hated the fake beat. But hey they're drunken party goers dancing and having a great time and the money made up for scruples.
Drop in a couple of your favourite strum along songs & Chords please.. some here would enjoy it.

Am G F
There must be some kind of way out of here
Am G F
Said the joker to the thief
Am G F
There's too much confusion
Am G F
I can't get no relief
Am G F
Business men they drink my wine
Am G F
Plowmen dig my earth
Am G F
No one would ever compromise
Am G F
No one of this world
Am G F
No reason to get excited
Am G F
The thief he kindly spoke
Am G F
There are many here among us
Am G F
Who feel that life is but a joke
Am G F
But you and I we've been through that
Am G F
And this is not our place
Am G F
So let us stop talking falsely now
Am G F
The hour's getting late
Am G F
All along the watchtower
Am G F
Princes kept the view
Am G F
While all the women came and went
Am G F
Barefoot servants too
Am G F
Outside in the cold distance
Am G F
A wildcat did growl
Am G F
Two riders were approaching
Am G F
And the wind began to howl
Am G F
All along the watchtower
Am G F
All along the watchtower
Am G F
All along the watchtower

Play the notes in the first chord distinctly from the lowest to the highest note, then brush across the second chord.
Maybe I can post some tab here for some fiddle tunes arranged for guitar if anyone is interested.
