I sent the following as Feedback to the Site Admins:
I feel it is an injustice that this user's avatar was removed as "racist". The avatar depicted Kunta Kinte, the hero of the miniseries Roots . The miniseries was a landmark in American television's depiction of blacks. I have copied and pasted this (emphasis added):

I find it funny that some people think that not watching a TV program is ignorance......That's trailer trash for you.
Don't worry. We're all ignorant. Some people try to attach so many definitions to that word it makes my head spin. All it means is "lacking knowledge" so when you make a decision about something in which you are ignorant then you are committing and act of ignorance. You obviously were ignorant of the fact the said picture was of kunte kinte and you objected to it IN IGNORANCE. Nobody can blame you for how you felt and I, for one, am sorry it caused you pain. This doesn't change the fact that you were ignorant and acted in ignorance.
Not watching Roots or knowing anything about does make you ignorant of it by definition.

Okay, I didn't know that, but it doesn't change anything. I commented about the people with whom Kirksey was arguing. The fact that one "non-white" person had her panties in a knot due to her own ignorance should not be enough to have someone else's avatar removed. Perhaps someone should be kind enough to educate this person as to what racism actually is.
How about being born in May, 1969. September 19, 1969, taken off the island, placed in a home on the mainland. Where was my mother? She was working as a domestic, in the hospital.
In 1969, the Island manager, what he deemed appropriate for a mother and a child...my mother had no choice in the matter, no say in the matter. Any child could be taken without reason. These people, did not need to give any reason whatsoever.
So now, how about you, educate me on Racism!

I never watched BGT. I rarely watch TV.
I was just wondering what wormwood thinks I would learn about by watching roots.
next time it's re-run somewhere you happen to be, check it out. its cultural importance is in the category of never having heard about chaplin. and not in the comedy sense. (or you could read it as well, although that's a bit irrelevant to this discussion).
not that not seeing it makes anybody a bad person, but it does mean you're missing something most people consider common knowledge. worldwide. (I doubt there are many countries which never aired it, and certainly no western ones.)

Have you watched Lost?
A plane flying from Sydney to L.A. crashed on an island in the Pacific, and in the first season of the show "The Others" captured all of the children in 2004 that were on the aeroplane that crashed in 2004 and took them back to their barracks without their parents' permission in 2004 and without any reason! Have you written to ABC and demanded that the show be removed?

Originally posted by wormwoodI'd wager that more than 95% of the people outside of the US would not recognize that picture as Kunta Kinte.

I know about it, but watching it would not make me understand its cultural significance any more as it's more about what was not talked about in mainstream media at the time, than what is actually shown in the series.
