Come on now you New Order bashers...
While Joy Division is no doubt a great band and influenced tonnes of bands that followed, New Order also did the same for the whole Electronica scene that peaked in the early 90's (until it was killed by Euro-Trash and highschool idiots driving down the street with the bass cranked up so loud their whole car rattled.)
New Order (with a nod to Kraftwerk..check out "She's a Model"...) paved the evolutionary road for Nine Inch Nails, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Lords of Acid, Thrill Kill Kult and a whole host of spin off genres that would meld electronica beats with heavy Industrial sounds including KMFDM. For those that remember, the Techno-Industrial scene in early 90's was just as good as the whole Seattle sound explosion with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and eventually Smashing Pumpkins. Music had it's second coming in 1990-1994.
Sadly, this all died and was replaced with Hip Hop after the Electronica and Industrial scene died and the younger crowd became more interested in image than substance and we've been stuck with 10 years of garbage on the airwaves and everyone doing their best Bower Bird impressions. (Check out David Attenborough's "The Life Of Birds" PBS tv show about Bower Birds and you'll know what I mean)
Watch the movie 24 Hour Party People for a good recap that includes Joy Division and New Order and how the scene started.
But if you can't even get into songs like Blue Monday, Confusion, Thieves like Us, and Bizzare Love Triangle, then wow do you ever have a limited musical palette.
Originally posted by uzlessIt's difficult to separate, really - Joy Division had already signalled that they would go down the Electronica route, and songs like "Something Must Break", "Isolation" and "She's Lost Control" show that they were already handling it extremely well. I think the main difference for me is that while Bernard Sumner was a great musician, his lyrics often left a great deal to be desired.
