Jerry Springer.

Aged 79.
One of his best quotes, and something we can take going forward here:

“Look, television does not and must not create values, it’s merely a picture of all that’s out there — the good, the bad, the ugly,” Springer said, adding: “Believe this: The politicians and companies that seek to control what each of us may watch are a far greater danger to America and our treasured freedom than any of our guests ever were or could be.”

Jerry Springer, the TV presenter best known for his raucous talk shows, has died aged 79. The Jerry Springer Show, which ran for nearly three decades from 1991, brought fights, flying chairs, and the fringes of US society to a global audience.

Word has it that he had been battling cancer.

Virtuoso jazz drummer Ralph Humphrey died on 23 April. I only just found out. I know him from his work with Frank Zappa during one of Zappa's greatest eras. His playing can be heard on...

• Over-Nite Sensation (1973)
• Apostrophe (1974)
• Roxy & Elsewhere (1974)
• Road Tapes, Venue #2 (2013)
• The Roxy Performances (2018)
• Halloween 73 (2019)
• Zappa/Erie (2022)

His skills and style had a direct effect on the music Zappa composed for him to play.

For a couple of tours, FZ had two drummers: both Humphrey and the perhaps more famous Chester Thompson [Weather Report, Santana, Genesis and Phil Collins].

It’s a good quote I suppose, but albeit with hindsight it is completely incorrect of course.

Television does shape and even create values. Social media even more so.

I remember on a weekend trip from Montreal to Toronto with a couple of friends, in the 60s, going to see him play at the Riverboat in Toronto’s Yorkville area.
