@great-big-stees saidAnd every bit as American ~ I suppose ~ as the Jewish-Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler or Jamaica's reggae and dancehall deejay Yellowman.
Indeed he was, though a North American too.🤔😉
@fmf saidNot being familiar with either of them, though I will “Google” them, I’ll have to abstain from commenting at this point.👍

@divegeester saidIf television and social media shape or create your values, that says far more about you than society at large.
It’s a good quote I suppose, but albeit with hindsight it is completely incorrect of course.
Television does shape and even create values. Social media even more so.
At best, television is indeed only a picture of what's out there in society, and in that, Mr. Springer was spot on. He was also fairly prescient in saying that those "that seek to control what each of us may watch" (or read) "are a far greater danger to America and our treasured freedom" than any of his guests ever were or could be.
Selfishly trying to minimize what he said to throw blame elsewhere is not a good look.
And don't ask me what I mean. You know what I mean.

@suzianne saidOf course television isn’t just a picture on the world! Television is a vast array of social, cultural, news, entertainment, history, science and religion. Of course it shapes values, drives opinions and can just as easily spread misinformation as well as benignly providing n information.

@fmf saidWasn't he a mayor somewhere at some point?
In terms of cultural phenomena, you can probably draw a line connecting what Springer exploited - to make his fortune - to the crassness of Marjorie Taylor Green and Karens on airplanes.

@fmf saidLike Trump or his “people”, Springer saw a group of “folk” who were untapped. Actually the same group though he found them first.

@ponderable saidYou are right Ponderable, my mistake. This is not a thread for entertainment.
I have created a thread Thread 196943, please discuss there. Thank you
