I don't think it would be wise to marry someone because one felt sympathy for them but did not yet have empathy.

I would see empathy "as a ground for mutual understanding and love" not sympathy. For me empathy = sympathy + understanding. But, hey ho, it's just vocabulary. I know what you mean, and I do agree with what you mean.
