This is something that I've been thinking about for a while, but looking on Shav's website has inspired me to start it off. I've noticed for quite a while that there seems to be quite a few people on here with an interest in photography, so what better way to get some feedback, and get your photos seen than by a comp on RHP.

Basically, I'd like to have a lot of different categories, for people to enter. For example (looking at some of my pics which are nice)
Sunrise/Sunset,
waterfalls,
cities,
friends/family,
Manmade structures,
Mountains,
Lakes,
Fog/Mist,
Sea,
Self,
Series (Multiple photos showing a single scene unfolding),
Natural Light (Am thinking of light shining through clouds, but other natural light effects are welcome, ie: Northern Lights, etc),
Wildlife,
Black and White,
Humour,
Natural Wonders (a broad category),
Poverty,
Valleys,
Kids,
Still Life

I prefer shooting nature and scenery, so they would be the categories I'd be most interested in. People are more than welcome to add further (sensible) categories if they so wish. Each participant can have up to 3 entries into each category.

I'd like for the entrants to be unknown to the voters, so entries can be emailed to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com along with a title and short note explaining the photo if you wish. If you feel uncomfortable with me hosting your photos, then just send on a link.

I'll open a category and give a week for people to forward me their entries, before listing the entries in this thread for people to vote on for a week. People can cast a 1, 2, 3 as in the Prose comp, with 5 points awarded for first place, 3 for second and 2 for 3rd, if that makes sense.

Sound good? Right, so we'll start off with Sunrise/Sunset. Either email upto 3 photos to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com along with a title and explanation, or host them yourselves and pm me the links. Closing date for entries will be next Sunday, 26/06.

Cheers,

D

I like the idea, too. What size should the pictures have?

It doesn't really matter. Obviously, it'd be good if the whole photo could be seen in 1024x768, but that's entirely up to u.

I'm glad there's a bit of interest being shown. It should be a fun comp.

Great idea, but alas no sun rise/set pics :'(

I`ll have to wait and see what the next category brings.

Maybe we should have "food" as a category? 🙂

Hmm, good categories (and great idea by the way!), but I think there are perhaps too many of them, as well as overly specifying a certain subject matter (eg cities/mountains/lakes), rather than leaving that aspect open and the requirement instead being a certain style. My suggestions for categories would be:

(subject based ones)
Sunrise/Sunset
Self
Children (not necessarily one's own)
People (non-self, non-children)
Urban
Natural landforms
Pets
Wildlife (any animal other than your pet)
Domestic (shot in your house)

(style based ones)
Light & Shadow (ie both present in pic)
Black & White (any shot in black and white)
Macro
Long exposure/available light (this could include night photography)
Movement/motion

Also Rag, don't know if you've come across www.flickr.com but it would be possible to set up an RHP group here. Anybody wishing to upload a photo of their own would have to create an account (it's free for a monthly upload allowance of 10MB - probably enough for people entering this competition - or £25 or so for unlimited uploads for a year). Would then be possible to leave comments attached to other people's pics, as well as having the use of a simple message board.

Anyways, the above categories and flickr suggestion are just a coupla ideas - feel free to discard completely!
