Here's my feedback, for what its worth...

I found myself judging this round a bit different to how I expected I would. Anything with a hint of humanity was instantly discarded (even though I know that humans are natural too, but we have a seperate round for their influence). This included Ghostly Trees as they are obviously planted in rows like that by man. It was a very nice photo, but not for this specific round.

Having said that, I really liked Symmetry, except for that one petal on the right which makes the flower imperfect. Now, I know that nature is imperfect, but when I was looking at the pic, I was just constantly thinking about that petal.

I really liked Goan Beach Channels due to the similarity of the channels to some kind of written language (I know my opinions seem a bit messed up, but something purely natural that reminds me of humanity ranks a lot higher for me in this round than something natural, which was arranged by man).

When I saw Easter Lights, I was taken aback by the photo. I didn't vote for it as number 1 for 1 reason. I was in a creative mindset 1 night ( =) ), and I had a very good, long look at all the pics, and I could just see things happening in "Trouble Brewing". It was like a pair of gods, mid battle, had just burst through the clouds. If DdV would excuse my doodling...http://community.webshots.com/photo/381515628/399959046bvutDL
I can totally see a bull like creature (with horns and hooves) standing over a humanoid that is lying on his back, holding a club. So that was why Trouble Brewing got top marks. It tickled my imagination.

As for my own pics, I'd appreciate some more feedback on Roadrunner and Pluto??

I thought Pluto would do much better than the one vote that it got. The otherworldliness of it makes it one of my favourite pics.

I think Roadrunner is a good pic also. Unfortunately, the resizing in webshots made it much fuzzier than my version on this pc (so in future all pics will be uploaded at their original sizes). I can barely make out a couple of squiggles which may or may not be tire marks. Just curious to hear people's opinions of it, especially from the people who didn't vote for it, why they were turned off it.

Monday night (25th) is the deadline for the submissions for the Manmade round. Send up to 3 entries each to rhpphotocomp@gmail.com with a title/caption if you wish.

I'll be starting a new thread for that round.

I really liked Pluto and think in hind sight should have rated it higher. It's a really thought provoking pic. It bends the two main rules of framing. One is when you split the pic into nine equal bits the main focal point is the centre bit ..known as the golden centre. The second rule if you want to break the first is to apply the "thirds" rule. split the pic into three equal vertical pieces the main focal point should be along any one of them. I like each third but can't decide the main third. I like it when I crop out the bottom just below half way. But would miss it later.

I went for tumble weeds.. I thought I saw it move.. lol. loved the dunes and tumble weeds are a brilliant natural wonder.

No problem about the doodling of course, I'm glad my picture sparked your imagination.

Thanks. 😉

As I mentioned earlier, one of my pictures had a very noticeable loss of quality due to resizing/compression. That was "Easter Lights". Of course I am happy that this didn't stop people to vote for it, 🙂 but in case you'd like to see the original (99kB instead of 17...), go here: http://home.online.no/~khgott/ottar.JPG

A friend told me off for showing you an aurora picture without warning about PLD (Polar Light Disease). Of course he is totally right, and I am quite worried that I might have infected someone. 😳 You can look up the diagnostic criteria here: http://home.online.no/~khgott/PLD.html
If you find that you have several of the mentioned symptoms, you should see a doctor, preferably an auroriatrist. I am really sorry about this and promise that I will invite you for a cup of tea or hot chocolate if you should ever come this way to see the aurora. 😉

You're right, the weed was moving. The wind was blowing and it was cold. I think the pic is spoiled because it should have been taken much earlier in the morning with stronger shade on the sand ripples in front of it. But that's the logistics of getting there. Plus it was taken on low-res with a not very good digital. In the distance is a dry river bed. The site is Sossusvlei in the Namib desert.

To me Roadrunner looked just a snapshot with an interesting caption. I'm no artist but I couldn't see anything in it. Don't feel bad, but that was the case with my Wild Fig - which captured something for me which won't mean anything for anyone else.

Pluto? Again I suppose you've got to be there to really appreciate it. I could see it, and I've been to places like that, but it didn't do it for me. Maybe early in the morning or late in the evening? The harsh light of deserts wash out textures in the day.

I agree. I really liked "Ghostly Trees" (despite the cliché ). Another picture I liked very much was "Mist Aftermath", and there again I see it as positive that you can't see things clearly. That's just what happens in the mist.

Speaking of mist, I liked "In a Mist" exactly for the same reasons Het Blumper disliked it for. The lack of a centre which makes the eye bounce around the photo is just how I often experience mist in reality. Therefore the picture gives me a feeling of being there. It helps, of course, that I absolutely love mist and fog. 🙂 (I would insert one of my favourite poems here, if it were not in German. 😉 )

Good point. I didn't take that into account at all, in fact the thought didn't even occur to me. But I abandoned "Abandoned" right away because I couldn't see how it fits into this round.

As someone who very rarely sees anything else in pictures than what's there, I always find it fascinating when people start talking about all the things they can see in clouds, aurora etc. Sometimes I can see it when they point it out. But I must admit I was totally unable to see what you see in this case, even after seeing the doodle. I guess that just shows how unimaginative I am (at least visually). 😕 But thanks for sharing your creative thoughts. 🙂

As for my own pics, I'd appreciate some more feedback on Roadrunner and Pluto??

I liked "Roadrunner" a lot. It could have made rank 1 or 2 on my list - the final order was a bit random, as I just couldn't decide which picture to put first. "Pluto?? " is a fascinating landscape, but I didn't quite like it as a picture. I am a bit of a balance freak, and this picture is very unbalanced (I guess that's a different way of saying that it bends the two main rules of framing, as Dan pointed out). The right side of the picture is much darker and has much more small details than the left side. That somehow gives me a weird feeling (getting out of balance because the picture is out of balance). The mountains in the background add another distraction. Too confusing for me.

That makes it tough to post them on the web. 🙁

I'm probably a little too anal about photos being clear, but to each his own.

I took the liberty of cropping it to see if I really would like it better. Tell me what you think: http://www.kailey.biz/photos/393141256eGcLxM_ph.jpg

(Ignore the increased fuzziness - I'll take it down after you've had a chance to look at it.)

I think Roadrunner is a good pic also. Unfortunately, the resizing in webshots made it much fuzzier than my version on this pc (so in future all pics will be uploaded at their original sizes). Just curious to hear people's opinions of it, especially from the people who didn't vote for it, why they were turned off it.

They may not be tire tracks (clearly I was wrong about the road in the tumble weed photo), but they sure look like it - if you're good with Photoshop, you can probably edit them out effectively withouth cropping. As for the resizing, I clicked on "view full size" for all of the photos in an attempt to give them the greatest opportunity for impact. Normally, they tell you to shoot scenic shots with early morning or late evening sunlight, for the color saturation. I actually liked the starkness of this photo, and the contrasts are good. The cloudless sky contrasts with the mountains in the background, and the rock formation in the foreground I think is nicely composed to fit the frame. I think it's a really nice shot - would love to see the original print.

By the way, that analysis of every photo took a lot longer than I anticipated, and I think towards the end, I was getting pretty tired. Sorry if I got a little terse at the end.

Also, regarding my comments - I'm nobody special, just an amateur photographer. I'm sure there're lots of professional photographers out there who would tell you that most of what I said was pure bunk. So, my opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them, and should be taken in the light. 😀
