You said there's a difference between using racial stereotypes and being racist. If that is the case, you have nothing to reproach widget with, except his alcoholism and possibly bad taste (which pales by comparison to the Suicide Kings defunct logo).

Originally posted by wormwoodSo if you as a Fin (wait till i check)....as someone who flies the flag of Finland, were to use a finnish stereotype, that would be racism to you ?
how's that not racist? to me it's clearly racist material.
What if i were to continually use the writings of Bernard Manning, and make some Paki jokes, and then back them up and argue that they are true....would that be racism, or could i just shrug my shoulders and say "you just don't get it" ?

"I'm just saying that there is a difference between using racist stereotypes (which apart from white american stereotyopes, Bill hicks never used), and being racist."
By the way--of course--nobody has asked (perhaps due to insufficient interest) what widget's purpose was (if any) is saying the things he said.

It is not the using of the stereotype, it is the way it is used.....don't you agree ?

The idea that widget harbours some malevolent racism towards the Irish is ridiculous!
Originally posted by Bosse de NageI'm sure the same could've been said about Michael Richards, doesn't make his actions any more pallatable.

Look mate, i was one of many people who found the posts to be off colour, the only difference is that i actually said so in the thread.

and no, I have no problem using finns as a sterotype. we do it all the time with swedes like stocken for example. swedes, the neighbours you love to hate, as the proverb goes. in fact, I'll be the first one to admit that all finns are way bigger drunkards compared to the irish who can barely hold their liquour. ask any norwegian to tell you some 'pekka-jokes', which are a particular type of stories concentrating on finnish mental landscape.
Originally posted by wormwoodI concur, springtime for hitler is an excellent example wher eit can be done well. But by the same token it can also be ballsed up that much that it can make all said nationality that read it, others that read it, and the mods and admins of a chess site see it as bigoted...yes ?

Pekka and Mikko are sitting in a cottage in the middle of nowhere. They've been drinking for three days straight and they finally run out of booze.
Pekka says to his mate "Hey, go and look in the tool shed and see if there's anything to drink there."
Mikko comes back with a bottle of methanol, and says "We could drink this, but we'll go blind!"
Pekka slowly looks around the cottage and out the window, and says "I think we've seen enough."
