@ghost-of-a-duke saidIs that where the word pious comes from?
In Leicestershire they worship the pork pie.
@the-gravedigger saidWell, it sorta' came from Pope Pious XII, who once said,

"If you like me, BEEP, you are pious, or go to Hell"
It must be strange to be pious.

@the-gravedigger saidPope is "Paus" in Indonesian. The origin of Old English is the Malay language after Chinese and Indian Singaporeans settled in Cornwall prior to the Middle Ages, a language transformation sometimes referred to as the Great Vowel Shift circa 1400.

I think the explanation is rather more prosaic. Pope was on one of his tours and was feeling a bit peckish. He spied a roach coach with the words pies R us written on it. As everywhere else seemed to be closed he said to one of his lackeys get us a few pies lad. The rest as they say is history.
@divegeester saidYou can't resist oozing your narcissism all over the forum, can you?
Oh do shut up you dull, humourless harpy.

@fmf saidYou are obviously using the word hypocritical wrong.
Oh, the irony.
To posters new to the General Forum: "Oh, the irony" means "Gosh, how hypocritical could you possibly be?"
Let's review:
Hypocrisy is the practice of feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not. The word "hypocrisy" entered the English language c. 1200 with the meaning "the sin of pretending to virtue or goodness". Today, "hypocrisy" often refers to advocating behaviors that one does not practice.
1. I feign nothing. I am what/who I am.
2. I do not pretend.
3. I practice what I preach. I am always myself.
If you don't like what I say, that is fine. There's no satisfying some people.
What is hypocritical is that the same people who call me hypocritical are the same people who are always, always pumping themselves up, claiming what is not true or blowing their own horn as loudly as possible. Of course, the actual irony is completely lost on them.
"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain" comes to mind here.
@suzianne saidAs I have pointed out many times before, you are far and away the absolute biggest example of all the behaviours that you constantly claim to be incensed by. This makes you a huge hypocrite. Hence the need to say "Oh, the irony" to you from time to time.
