This is not anything but the Start!
and i heard about bill gates, and got into a heated discussion with one of my friends about him. his argument was that ol' bill gives away 1/3 of his annual pay cheque to charity, giving more than pretty much anyone else money wise. my argument what that i could live quite happily for the rest of my life on 2/3rds of mr gates' pay cheque. chances are, i won't even earn that amount of money in my whole life...sure, i don't give a third of what i earn, but i'm a poor debt-ridden* student. i can barely live on what i earn anyway...
*all £74.32 of it...

But I believe what Bob G and Bill G have achieved is pretty incredible.
They didn't need to do anything but they are prepared to their a$$ on the line to try and make a difference.
Originally posted by invigoratehow are they putting their a$$es on the line? to properly put their asses on the line they would give all their money away to those who really need it and actually go to the countries needing help and, you know, do something...not visit, but work. that's properly putting your a$$ on the line. funding/organising a big concert is not. it may help poverty, but it's not putting your a$$ on the line.

sure, what they've done is incredible i don't doubt that. but methinks they can do a lot more. although, there's a minority in rich countries that don't need to do a lot more...

Sure Bob and the crew could have gone to africa and worked themselves, put their a$$ on the line as you've put it and done some good. (So could I or you, no?)
But by organising these concerts they put the idea into millions of peoples heads that something needs to be done and we can achieve this in our lifetime. In fact we can achieve this now if the G8 made a few tough decisions.
They have even laid out exactly what we need to do.
Sign up to the makepovertyhostory.org website.. Read the little booklet they have out. Be aware i guess..
This is a far more effective way of changing the current situation out there than sending Bob and Bono out there working.
They have done a lot more than any of us so i don't see where all the criticism is coming from. Yeah they have massive egos but so do most rockstars.. Also what if you did something worthwhile for starving people, saved some childrens lives. I'm sure you'd feel pretty good about yourself and have an ego boost.
Its about the message, not the frontmen.

anyway, i'm not so much critising them (in my last post i was meerly saying they weren't putting their a$$es on the line) as saying they could do a lot more, as can everybody. me included (although i do do some stuff for charity, just not specifically for poverty).
actions speak louder than words. a concert is not action, it is still words.
Originally posted by geniusI would think that change starts with people becoming aware.

If they're not aware, then things certainly won't change!
Awareness, then hope and then the will to act.

don't get me wrong by the way, i think it's a good idea and all. i'm meerly being disillusional. as, well, i'm disillusioned...

Now it was about the west structurally helping Africa.
In another 20 years time people will be aware that it is the system which is wrong and needs replacing.
Patience...

The only jobs left will be service jobs and working for the Bush administration. Yes, China will give the Bush family a job running the country - since it was their doing that allowed China to take over.

just wait ppl for the concert at murrayfield stadium edinburgh, for the final live 8 concert, opening act is of course the legendary PROCLAIMERS! and yes its with 500 miles!
singalong now folks!
p.s. especially you dfm65!
I was at our local bar (when it was still open) coupla years back drinking (a lot) with a friend of mine listening to a live band play on stage. Just really a guy with a guitar singing and playing some old rock tunes. The bar was owned by the local hells angels chapter and my friend pierced for them so we pretty much knew everyone there.
Halfway through his set the guy takes a break and my friend goes up to him and asks if he can have a go at the guitar, my friend is pretty good at playing, (my friend and I at this stage are completely trashed) so he starts strumming 500 miles and of course I grab the mike and we do a duet (badly I must add, I have a singing voice of a cat going through a blender) but we did manage to get a whole bunch of bikers and goths and heavy metal people to sing along to 500 miles.
the proclaimers were playing at my union a couple of weeks ago-my mum was frantically persuading me to go...
and if you're ever a scot feelling patriotic abroad then proclaimers songs are what you sing (few people know the 2nd or 3rd verses of our national anthem. everyone knoes letter from america!)
also, it's called "i'm gonna be", not 500 miles. just to be picky...
