@fmf saidIt was a bizarre situation, hard to understand unless you know the people involved. If Will Smith is short-tempered and undisciplined, colleagues and friends will probably be familiar with that. I like Will Smith as an actor very much and that stays, but I don't understand his behavior - partly because I never find anger when I need it.
True. But I think swearing loudly would have been more acceptable than what happened.
@torunn saidYou may or may not be aware of this but Will's wife has a medical issue which causes her to lose her hair. Chris Rock first made a joke about it back in 2016 from what I've heard and so this has built up for many years just didn't happen last night. I just hope the Academy doesn't kick Will out or take back his award, which is the only one he has won, hard to believe but true. I know a Comedians job is to make jokes but I sincerely believe Chris Rock has stepped over the line with continually mentioning it. Will has been with Chris in Movies so the knows him well, and he is not pressing charges against Will, I have to give him kudo's for that!

@torunn saidSuzianne,
Susan,
If Will had used his fist instead of an open hand, it would have been a total disaster and ruined the evening for all, not least himself. What he did was a bit chevaleresque and did no harm really.
I spelled your name wrong. I know it is not Susan, it is easier to say somehow.

@very-rusty saidI know that, I have read about it. I think it was totally the wrong time and place for a joke like that - not fun, no wit, just bad taste.

@suzianne saidI agree with you suzianne and believe the slap was warranted. He defended his wife when he saw she was not pleased with the joke. Chris is lucky Will didn't punch him, more or less don't say that again.
You are correct that he handled the situation, broadcast as it was on live TV, much better than I would have. But I don't have the burden of wanting to remain a popular movie star.
I also viewed what he did as an old-fashioned throwing down the gauntlet. He didn't necessarily want to hurt him, just to put him on notice.
My bet is Chris Rock will not make those kind of jokes in the future about her medical condition.

@very-rusty saidI hope it was Smith's wife reprimanding him for his ridiculous reaction that led to his apology.
He defended his wife when he saw she was not pleased with the joke.
@torunn saidI’m not clear why you would think this. The events were demonstrable and clear, knowing or knowing the protagonists personally would have no bearing whatsoever on whether one can come to a definitive judgment on the matter.

@very-rusty saidDo you think Chris Rock will “soil his pants” next time he sees Will Smith?
My bet is Chris Rock will not make those kind of jokes in the future about her medical condition.

@divegeester saidFor such an occasion, and for the award nominees and so much at stake, I can only understand it, if he normally is short-tempered and undisciplined. Somebody else doing it, I don't understand.

@torunn saidSix years of similar tasteless mocking of Smith's wife about alopecia = the "something else too", perhaps. Something like that. I dunno for sure. To be fair, I don't really follow this kind of stuff from the wilds of equatorial Java.
I know but still I believe there must have been something else too.
@torunn saidI don’t think there is anything further to understand than the facts as demonstrated live on global television in order to make a definitive judgment that what Chris Rock did was wrong in terms of it being misogynistic, snide and in poor taste, and also to make a definitive judgment that what Will Smith did was wrong in terms of it being brutish, cowardly, illegal and completely disproportionate to the offence given by Rock.

I don’t need to personally know either of the men involved to come to those judgments. Both were without excuse.
