Indeed. I'm tired of people saying, "wouldn't good players match an engine 100% because it's the best moves?" Engines don't even match each other despite similar playing styles. Other great human players seldomly match aswell. If you match someone or something 90-100%, then it isn't you playing, it's really that simple!

Yes, most moves in chess can be immediately dismissed as crap, but chess isn't so much right move vs wrong move. There are SEVERAL different ways to succeed in chess, usually depending on the individuals experiences, learning, and creativity. It's not like classic math with only one right sure awnser!

Whoa! David Tebb and Exy were good friends. Besides that, Tebb is a nice, honorable guy. It's all about some collected data, of which we know that Exy had put his games into Winboard for analysis. I suspect that the move following his d/l of the position matched up with the engine in Winboard.

Even if this was a coincidence, how many times can you do this and not become a suspect?

These are pure mathematical possibilities. Reality paints a different picture. My argument is most of the possible moves are losing ones which proper players about club level wouldn't even make. That limits the mathematical odds. I repeat, chess is very finite. It might be difficult choosing between the maybe 10 options to you in a move, but still, not infinite.

Sorry, I was speaking out of context of the discussion in hand.

I was only stating the fact of the massive number of moves/positions possible in chess. I wasn't making any point about engine use with this observation.

I use an pgn viewer when making moves in my games. The analyse board on the site is frankly rubbish. I want to take a position and try variations and be able to go back and check them. As the analyse board doesn't let me do this I use a pgn viewer. A program called SCID does the job.

I guess this (and my rating) makes me a suspect. I'd like to say that as I'm not a cheater I'm not at all worried. But I don't think I can anymore.

Ah, but you see, when you use that rubbish analyze board feature, as I, it's a real challenge, and actually has to make you think/visualize/concentrate combinations and strategy! Think of it as a rusty challenge unique to RHP that is the same for everyone else.

Works well against chess computers. The sooner you get them out of book, the more complex the middle-game options are and thus the harder a time the computer has. Hey, if you suspect your opponent is a cheater but can't prove it, maybe playing an irregular opening is a good strategy. ;-)
