The post that was quoted here has been removedRuy/Najdorf is certainly more popular, but is it really fair to say better? And even if it is better for them, why does that mean it's better for us? Everything I've heard suggests that I don't play anything like a GM.
Certain lines are refuted, but white can choose to avoid them (i.e. double Muzio Gambit). I don't think any King's Bishop Gambit lines are refuted, and players like Short and Polgar (Don't ask which one - Judit probably) have used it with success.
BTW:Both Cludi and Northern Lad use the KG very effectively on here.
The post that was quoted here has been removedIt is being played at the top levels though, this has been established...Not as often as the Ruy or Najdorf, but neither is the Scotch and you seem to be a major proponenty of that. Just because it's not popular with GM's does not mean it's any worse necessarily (Although objectively the Ruy and Najdorf are much less risky.)
Spassky never lost with the KG in major tournament games, and once said something to the extent of 'I don't get much of an advantage with the King's Gambit, but I don't get much of an advantage with the Ruy Lopez either.'
The post that was quoted here has been removedIt doesn't really matter, it was just as out of style then. But As I said, Short, Polgar, Adams (This one's a maybe actually), and Fedorov.
Also, you only showed one player using it with success. And it was Kasparov, who could make anything look good.
I am not sure if he still plays it, but Joe Gallagher was the main proponent of the KG for a long time, and he's a strong GM from over the pond. A real sicko too. KID expert, awesome book writer, gross attacking player. He wrote an awesome book on the KG that's out of print now, but well worth it if you can find it. Also, as far as the Dragon goes, alot of people play it / have played it. Kasparov, Topalov, Kramnik (!), I think Carlsen played it in a tourney game not too long ago, I saw a Dragon game in that Seattle Sluggers tournament not too long ago, a 9. 0-0-0 that Black won, Golubev played it a bunch, although he retired to write. It's fine. I think the thing that alot of people forget is just because top GM's don't play it doesn't mean it sucks. You know, a while back were GM's playing the Slav like mad like they are now? Bent Larsen was famous for taking lines that GM's discarded for something else and bringing them back with great success. He even had a comment in his book about it.
Originally posted by !~TONY~!Yeah exactly, nice examples too. Completely forgot Gallagher, but he did quite well with it. That's a hard book to find for a reasonable price though. 🙂
