Fat Lady was clearly in the wrong, and posting personal information about someone against their wishes is a serious matter. However a 3 year forum ban is completely over the top. It might as well be a lifetime. A 3 week ban should be more than sufficient.
Fat Lady probably believed that the person who was named, wouldn't mind. After all, if someone writes posts such as the following...
"What's your rating and your real name coward?"
...then it's reasonable to assume that the poster is not a hypocrite and will be happy to reveal their own identity. But obviously, as the person in question supports the ban, this assumption turned out to be false.
Perhaps the forum mod who made the decision to ban Fat Lady wasn't aware of all the circumstances? It seems that all the trouble started from arguments in the Only Chess forum, which some of the mods don't visit. Fat Lady's posts must be seen in context with what has gone on before.
I agree with David Tebb. Three Years!! That's huge! I haven't been on the site for more than a few months!! I think that a month is adequate.
Let them change it. Or, if they disagree, force them too. One thing, there is an idea, called Operation Spartacus. Those familiar with the story of Spartacus will agree that it sounds great fun.
Naming people in the forums might not seem like much of an offence, but is one of the few that could cause real problems to the site. The admins seem to be going for much more of a zero tolerance policy in the forums, which is on balance a good thing as it's a bit tedious trying to have a constructive discussion in the middle of a flame war.
In FatLady's case I think the length of the ban is ridiculous. Either he should be permanently banned, or banned for a month or two. On the assumption that he hasn't been warned previously a short ban or warning seems more appropriate.
I don't think any of us want to go back to the days when you could get away with anything, but it feels as if the actions of the mods are becoming more and more Draconian, and that's no good either.
Who knows? Has he done this before? If someone revealed my name, though, I would certainly be upset! And on the Internet, then he should be banned. And if he is freed from the ban, then anyone banned will be appealing for the same thing to happen to them.
Shortening the ban may be appropriate, if he has undertood his mistake. Maybe 2 months ban???
