@bigdoggproblem saidYes and no, the words written were with intent. If you fail to grasp that intent you missed the boat all together. If you grasp it, it will allow you to follow its instructions more clearly great!
Everyone adds their own spin to what they read. It is unavoidable. Reading without interpretation precludes understanding of the text.
It isn't about read this, and make it fit inside your world views so your version is what you go by. We are told to read this and study it, so we are rightly dividing the Word of God.
2 Timothy 2:14-16 English Standard Version (ESV)
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness,
@kellyjay saidYou seem to believe that there is no imperative for a Christian to be charitable or fight poverty because the Bible has a verse in it that says “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.” Is that the long and short of it?
You are looking at this ignoring all other teaching right now in the NT. John the Baptist do you accept what he said was from God, and what he said was it any less true that what Jesus said when he was saying what God gave him?
The Father sent the Son, the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit who also teaches us the things of God. So if a man is moved by God's Spirit t ...[text shortened]... o with, do what can with what you have, to help those around you. Whereever your at do what you can.
@kellyjay saidAre these activities not founded on the moral imperatives that are part and parcel of being a Christian?
Christianity has built schools, universities, hospitals, orphanages, sets up temporary shelters, food drives, there are Christian organizations attempting to fee women and children from sex trafficking, and so on. That isn’t taking care of the poor and needy?
@fmf saidNo, I'm saying your twisting my words and your failing to grasp the text of scripture is causing to find issues where there are none.

@fmf saidThe only thing that matters for someone to be a Christian is Jesus Christ, obeying a law doesn't do it, being kind doesn't do it, helping the poor cannot do it.

@kellyjay saidIf there were a commandment "You shall be charitable and fight poverty" would you disobey it because it had nothing to do with being a believer in Jesus?
The only thing that matters for someone to be a Christian is Jesus Christ, obeying a law doesn't do it, being kind doesn't do it, helping the poor cannot do it.
@FMF
As I said you fail to grasp the text, and you twist my words out of the points made. For you there is no foundation to build on, its all endless questions on an ever changing foundation, nothing solid to hang on any truth on, to build on.

@kellyjay said"Do" what exactly? Please be specific. You said "doesn't do it" three times. What is the "it" exactly? It can't just be a thought in your head. There must be some substance, some behaviour, some characteristic, some obedience, some walk to walk, the "it" must comprise more than just typing a sloppy bromide like "The only thing that matters for someone to be a Christian is Jesus Christ", surely?
