Alas, like an aging lover, Old Europe holds no more charms for me -- I'm more inclined to go to Trieste, Kracow or Ljubljana.
Originally posted by TDR1Don't hold your breath -- the next two debates will be mostly on the economy, a topic which even McCain himself has admitted to being ignorant of. I think Hillary Clinton had it dead right with her ad saying something like "this time the call is about the economy... and John McCain just wants to let that phone keep ringing".
As a republican (from Delaware might I add), I really feared this debate. Having met senator Biden several times, I knew of his ability to speak on his feet and to essentially BS his way through situations. Basically, he is a good politician. Palin, on the other hand, does not really have much experience in this field, so I was EXTREMELY worried.
However, P ...[text shortened]... way to go. I am just glad there are two more presidential debates for McCain to redeem himself.
I guess it could have all been over last night, yet Palin showed a lot of pluck and didn't fold. In fact, she exhibited a lot of the qualities that Americans like her for: steadfastness, resoluteness, and her homespun humor. With so much of the deck stacked against her, I'd say she was the real winner of this debate.
i would say she was trying to a smartass the whole time, and that biden scored the real points but couldnt get a near knockout and palin played dodge all night (a good plan) so id say biden won but its not really going to matter. theres big leads in colorado, virginia is still staying strong, ohio and florida are in play as always and iowa isnt even considered a swing state any more..
Originally posted by der schwarze RitterAgain you're missing the point. The whole premise is wrong. She shouldn't have been up there in the first place. The reason so much is stacked against her is because she's a terrible VP candidate.

Not answering questions, giving only pre-learned lines, and trying to be cute is not, I repeat NOT, enough to win a debate - even if the opponent is much smarter, a better debator, and a better politician.
Originally posted by LundosI'm not missing your point: Liberals don't like Palin and are trying to smear her. But who are you to say that she's ineligible? She was up there, wasn't she? She's what's kept the McCain ticket running and I suspect more conservatives will be voting for her, rather than McCain this November. Furthermore, if anyone did a dodge during the debate, I'd say it was Biden. He misrepresented himself the whole night -- he pretended to be a normal person instead of the morally bankrupt, liberal politician he is. What do you think Joe Biden got during his last trip to Home Depot? My guess is that he was there to pick up some illegal aliens to mow his yard or work on his 6,800 sq. ft. mansion that sits on 6.5 acres in front of a lake. Did you know that the only job he's held during the past 32 years has been in the Senate? He should be ashamed that he's amassed that much wealth while working in government, buying and selling influence. Joe Biden, you're a schmuck!

What's really interesting about her strategy is how effectively it worked during the debate. A case in point. Gwen Ifill asked a question about the bankruptcy bill that Biden had voted in favour of and that Obama had voted against ( it limited the extent to which a person undergoing mortgage stress could declare bankruptcy) and Biden was getting a lot of traction from the uncommitted female voters of Ohio in CNN's live tracking of the debate. The men were fairly neutral on the issue. Then it was Palin's turn and on the back of Biden's finishing comment about there being ways to help people now and that those ways are not being supported by -- the Bush administration nor did he believe by John McCain and Gov. Palin, Ifill then asked Gov. Palin, is that so?
It was interesting to note how the Ohio voters then tracked with Palin's response
She came out strong with the following and she started to track strong negative responses from both male and female voters. It seems the average American is not that impressed with someone who clearly has no intention of letting the buck stop with them and chooses to dodge and run with a well worn stump speech.
PALIN: That is not so, but because that's just a quick answer, I want to talk about, again, my record on energy versus your ticket's energy ticket, also.
I think that this is important to come back to, with that energy policy plan again that was voted for in '05.
When we talk about energy, we have to consider the need to do all that we can to allow this nation to become energy independent....
But the interesting thing that then happens is that as Palin unswervingly sticks to her line of argument she gradually gets the uncommitted to warm to her spiel and within less than a minute of talking she starts to track positive responses from the audience again.
I'm not even sure what this means. Is the general public as flaky as the politicians that serve them??
Originally posted by jlillyOf course she lost that debate. If you do not answer important basic questions about financial and economic issues that are crucial in the devastating crisis which is now going on (... McCain's preferences for deregulation instead of regulation) and simply state that she will talk "straight to the American people" instead, you lose the debate.
Palin sounds like a robot that plays one of the claw grab games for political terms to make sentences.
Biden acts like he was just roused from a power nap backstage.

You don't have ghost towns in America?
And about the Muslim 'threat' you don't scare me. First of all they're not a threat. Oh, they have a different religion, but so have the Hindus and Buddhists. So some of them are fanatics. There's Christian fanatics too, and they're just as brainwashed and worrisome as the fanatic Muslims. The rest of them I consider ...[text shortened]... y citizens like me. It's called religious freedom. I believe you have it in America too.

I don't care what the Europeans think of us, nor do I want the next president of the United States to worry about what the Europeans think of us. I just want him to do his job which is to protect our citizens and our interests and get out of the way so that we can have jobs to go to and so we can make our own decisions about what's best for us and our families.

No they sit fearfully inside of concrete bunkers directing operations against foreign nationals and drop daisy cutters in foreign lands that tend to generate a lot of "collateral damage"
DSR is completely ignorant of the issues. Sorry pal, Palin sucked major crap. She did not perform well. She appealed to many dumb american's and christians. End of story. She isn't intelligent enough to be VP let alone president. She didn't even answer any of the questions during the debate, and at one point, flat out said she wasn't answering a particular question!
Stop mentioning that Biden has a 6500 Sq foot house on a lake. McCain didn't even know how many homes he owned. Or how many cars he had.

Our military is famed for killing many civilians. Sometimes for fun! Sometimes just to see them bleed! Kinda like Cortez, who cut open pregnant women to see if the woman was going to have a boy or girl.
And why do you think 9/11 happened? Because the US has messed up much of the world. I'd dare say we damn well deserved it.
