not suffered any adverse effects from being giving a whacking which were generally
dished out for serious offences like trying to electrocute my sister, in fact, I got away
with a lot more than I was caught and punished for.
I find it ironic that namby pamby secular liberalism is at pains to tell parents that
physically disciplining children is teaching them that violence is a last resort when the
kids are all blasting each other to bits on the xbox360 with stinger missiles and
machine guns.

I find it an odd assertion since I would think it would tend to teach the opposite.

may have been a midwife i cannot quite remember, she stated that physically
disciplining children was teaching them that violence was a solution. Now i did not think
much of it at the time, I was only enquiring what was acceptable in the eyes of a
professional person, but clearly the perception was and remains, that physical discipline
is immoral.

Of course there are a variety of views and some are likely to be odd.
Depending on how/when it's done I wouldn't necessarily call it immoral, but I just think there are a lot of potential risks that come with it and it's nowhere close to being the most effective method.

person, but i understand that even so, views may differ. Of course children must be
made aware through reason why such a course is unacceptable and disciple in the
form of reasoning surely is to be preferred, but i have seen it countless times,
someone's little darling ignoring their mothers warnings and attempts to discipline, 'ill
smack you, if you do that again, '', 'i will , ill smack you if you dont stop', 'this is
your last warning, ill smack you, i will', meanwhile the kid is oblivious and carries on
safe in the knowledge that his mother has no intention of physically discipling him.
Of course children are individuals and what works for one not work for another, for
example, my brother would have taken being smacked over being grounded any
day, my other brother would have been quite happy being grounded.

Originally posted by FMFAlthough I disagree with the comment, do you really think the man should be thrown in jail for two years? He never was caught abusing children and no children have been reported abused yet he is thrown in jail for two years anyhew.
So where does that leave you with regard to your own OP question?
Conversely, let's say that Obamer comes out and says the same thing. Do you think he would get two years behind bars? Nope. More than likely all that would happen is another painful episode of debaters on here distancing themselves from the comment but in the same breath say how much better he still is than Romney despite his stupidity.

The problem is that frankly, they are making threats they don't ever go through with. With any punishment if you threaten it and NEVER even come close to doing it the kid will learn that and keep pushing the limits. They have to at least believe you'll do what you say.
