Between 0.21% and 0.26% so below OECD average. Nothing to be proud of in the figure.

Msat generous people are from smaller European nations - the Dutch, Swedes, and Norwegians. If we are going to congratulate people on generosity, they are the ones to give praise to.

Thats because they are not taking care of the rest of the planet and paying for the military force to do it with.

About 20% of the GNP of the US is spent on defense. If you take that into consideration it is a heck of a lot more than what Germany, japan, and France paid to the UN. I got an idea why don't above mentioned countries be the policeman of the world and the US will give more to the UN.๐Ÿ™‚
Figures given are of foreign aid -as quoted in the 1973 article. It includes famine relief, medical aid, and development assistance. This is mainly direct aid, although a small proportion goes to UN agencies. The US has not paid its agreed share of UN financing but this is a different matter.

It shows contrary, to what many wish to believe, the US is not the major aid donor in the world and amounts of aid given do not reflect its economic success, prosperity of its citizens or relative size of its economy.

So - your argument is - America does not feed the hungry, heal the sick or shelter the homeless any more but you shoudl be admired becasue you spend more on weapons of mass destruction than anyone else?

I think the desire to be a global policeman has diminished a little over the last year. Those Iraqis are not looking very grateful yet.

I could put up a few places you could police - like Liberia for instance. Pity they haven't got oil. To aspire to be a global policeman you have to look after more than your own interests.

What are you talking about steerpike? The US is continuing its fight for freedom and democracy throughout the world, and surely it is in everyone's interest to be free... If you aren't convinced that we have the interests of everyone in mind, look at our history of intervention in Latin America and East Asia. The US motto is "Human Rights First!"

No way would we go!

We are involved in a couple of places already - East Timor, and the Soloman Islands. Pretty small stuff, but so far reasonably successful - and we have taken one casulty from enemy fire. East Timor has gone from milita gangs and killings to peace - they were not keen at shooting at people who could shoot back. The Solomans includes Guadcanal - pretty well known to Ameruican soldiers.

There is a place for armed intervention but in both cases we are in at the request of local governments. Pretty hard to make peace if everyone wants to keep fighting.

I don't think we are getting anything out of it - but there is oil between Australia and Eact Timor Amazing how it crops up.

The US government did what it believed waas right in invading Afghanistan and Iraq. Yes, they did it partially for the oil in Iraq, but had they not gone in, tens of thousands more would have died along with the tems of thousands already killed by the Taliban/Hussein et al, so I say well done Mr Bush for saving those lives.

Also I thank all those coalition troops who risked their lives to free the people of the above countries. You are the true heroes.

This may sound a little sucky, but frankly, the threat of a warhead landing anywhere near me makes me that way.

God bless America and the free world

In case your wondering I am British.

Do you live in Israel? ๐Ÿ˜›
Seriously, do you believe that Saddam could have landed a warhead on British soil even though the government has admitted that was never possible?

And when the liberals grab power the foreign policies will be just the same except it will be in the name of "Person Rights". ๐Ÿ˜€
