I'm a native English speaker, and it honestly must be one of the most ridiculously difficult language to learn. So many of the rules are unnecessary and those that are required always seem to have exceptions. I tried to do a Swiss girl's English grammar homework for her the other day and found it really difficult. What does this say about the language?
Try Latin or Spanish where every word follows a logical rule set. Much more pleasant languages too.

I wish my native language was something other than English. Then perhaps I could enjoy reading my native language, in the words written by craftsman with the skills to inform, inspire and entertain.
I am not an English/spelling/grammar Nazi, you can speak, spell and write however you like, provided that meaning can be obtained from your output. I had hoped that this thread might be a sampler of what can be done with a language.
Oh well, one can but try. At least we did achieve three postings worth reading.

Not keen on the idea of a closed protected environment, English should be robust enough to take a lot of adaptation. We don't want to end up with an Alliance Anglaise.
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it

I'd like to see a thread on "Beautiful Norwegian" or "Beautiful Gaelic" but being monolingual I have to leave it to the experts. All languages must have prose and poetry of a quality that can be appreciated even by outsiders. I recall Verlaine from secondary school English class, the poem was written in French and not translated for the benefit of the students, the idea was simply to listen to the sounds of the language.
Can't imagine that being done in a school these days ...
Huh, please dont you rock my boat
