“those brave souls on the submarine died in a cause - pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge”
Boris Johnson
Is that really what they were doing?

"Pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge”?

What new thing were they hoping to discover?

Yes.
Do not ever underestimate the men who push the bounds of scientific knowledge to the limit. Only by pushing can we progress in our knowledge and understanding of the human condition. Surely you are not implying that these billionaires were simply taking a macabre interest at ogling at the Titanic wreck?

Yes, I am. The owner of the sub was a charlatan. I take it you didn't bother to watch the video.

It is absolutely ludicrous to suggest they were "pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge”.

I asked but you didn't answer. What new thing were they hoping to discover?

What progress was being made? What frontier are you referring to?

The scientific knowledge that the sub was a death trap waiting to happen was already available to us and had been raised by technical experts. This kind of hubris is already well understood by scientists working in the fields of psychology and psychiatry. Boris Johnson's words were disingenuous drivel.

I hope you are not referring to thoughtful analysis and reaction to the tragedy such as this...

I applaud this woman's "mindset". It's a pity she has been inundated with death threats.
Excellent 15 minutes.

No, I’m not referring to narratives such as hers at all. I’m referring to the those who are sneering at the deaths of 5 people simply because they were very wealthy. People who aren’t very wealthy also take stupid uninformed risks. Whist the commentary towards the end of the clip reasonably points out that for some their extreme wealth can lead to a sense of invulnerability driven by hubris, the idea that is ok to sneer at someone’s death simply because they are wealthy reveals a certain mindset I feel.

They only thing they collectively pushed was their own disregard for safety, the prime culprit being the CEO of OceanGate. They weren’t the first to visit Titanic in a submersible, they weren’t the first to dive to a greater depth, they were just the first people to die in an unregulated, uncertified piece of experimental kit which was clearly unfit for its purpose.

So what “bounds of scientific knowledge” were they pushing?

I agree, of course. But I believe there is a lot of unconscious or implicit sneering going on by people who say things along the lines of now is not the time to be talking about the 600 people who drowned off the coast of Greece ...when such people probably never did find any time to talk about those 600 people, back then or now.

“Lefties sneer. But those brave souls on the submarine died in a cause - pushing out the frontiers of human knowledge - that’s typically British……and that fills me with pride”
Boris Johnson in Daily Mail.
“Lefties sneer. ~ ~ ~ Boris Johnson in Daily Mail.

Boris Johnson is sneering at those who would put the 5 deaths in the context of the 600 deaths and thus keep it just a tiny bit real. Why would they necessarily be "lefties"? It is the Boris Johnsons of this world who are engaged in dehumanizing those who don't share his worldview. The babble about "frontiers" and "progress" is windy rhetoric and deflection.

Like I told everyone those 600 were not multi millionaires! Kind of sums up what a life is worth doesn't it. When the lives of 5 millionaires is considered a bigger story than the deaths of 600, I find that really sad.

the only reason these folks are in the news is because of the staggering amount of money involved

What a foghorn of ignorance!
What on earth has money got to do with it? Sounds very much like “lefty sneering” at the rich.
How about bravery, adventure, excitement, discovery, advancement of science? Yes - a little foolhardy, but their plight captured the public imagination like Apollo 13.
How about a little respect?

For whom should we reserve the most respect? The CEO of OceanGate?

Money does have something to do with the publicity. In any given day about 200,000 people die all over the world. The ones we hear about in the news are usually the rich or famous or celebrity types. I can bet hundreds died in drownings the very same day, but the world does not know about them.

And thats normal. Im not at all saying anything is wrong with that.
