@torunn saidWell, apparently some celebrity worshippers have convinced themselves that they were pushing the frontiers of scientific knowledge so that the human race could progress in our understanding of the human condition.
The more I read about this terrible tragedy, the angrier I get. Why on earth undertake such an incredibly stupid thing and also bring a child along?

@fmf saidCouldn't somebody in their right mind have talked them out of this absurd idea? Did somebody even try? Pushing frontier... indeed!

@torunn saidThat's the saddest part about it. Apparently the lad had great reservations about the whole thing.

@the-gravedigger saidAs it turned out for very good reasons. The experts can't all be wrong, you got to believe the ones who have nothing to gain in what they said.

@torunn saidThe video I shared talked about how he felt obligated because he didn't want to reject his family's kindness, paying for his voyage.

@torunn saidAnd didn't she talk him into doing it despite his misgivings?
How sad for the boy's mother to know that this expedition was doomed from the very beginning, even as an idea. What a tragedy for her.
It makes the regret all the more bitter.
Or bitterer.
Inconsolable regret, I'd say

@torunn saidWhat could possibly give some compensation?
And what have we learned from this, FMF? What could possibly give some compensation?
Maybe some grandchildren from her son's siblings, if there are any? That would perhaps help a bit. But, compensation? No. grandchildren would just be a life-goes-on distraction into which she could pour the love from her saddened heart, that's all.
Life is full of such stories. The dad who takes his excited child out to show off his new hot car or speedboat. The avid skiing family whose pregnant wife didn't go on this particular trip. People who take risks rarely think too much about those who may have to live with their loss for the rest of their lives. If you care about others, you will suffer loss.

@kewpie saidI know there are many similar tragedies, and we read about them and eventually forget. Some stay in our minds and hearts, as this one will. ❤️
